2012 Baby Break Guest Post Signups Are Open!

Back in 2010 I asked a number of readers (some with blogs of their own and some without) to help me out, following the birth of The Rooster, by authoring guest posts so that I would be able to take a two week hiatus from posting to tend to my family. Well, with another baby on the way and due in mid-June, I’m again asking for your help in having the site run more or less on autopilot while I take care of two little ones, The Wife, and myself as best as a frazzled father of two can.

All I’m asking for is some sort of original content, it can be anything from 300 to 2000 words (generally my posts range from 300 – 1500) and span the spectrum as long as it’s not hateful or directly related to religion. You’d author a post by June 1st, 2012 and send it to me in an e-mail and I’d queue it up. You can include pictures (as long as you own them and provide me with permission to use it in perpetuity or have permission to use them on my site through some other means (Creative Commons for Commercial Use, etc), embedded video, etc, etc, etc. The only thing I ask is that you write something you feel would be interesting to the rest of the readership.

The last time we did this, the posts were very well received by the readers and comment counts were through the roof. While not everyone appreciates my allowing guest posts (one person said, “I read YOUR site for YOUR content, not someone else’s), I’m not here to make everyone happy ;-)

So, if you’re interested feel free to sign up below. Your information will only be known by me and The Google. I’m looking for at least 10 posts but will take up to 20 (that’s 2 to 4 weeks worth, not including poll posts on Sundays). If you’re interested in being called upon to write more than one post in the event we need it, there’s a spot for you to enter that as well.

So feel free to ask any questions you may have below or just fill out the form to sign up. I’m interested in knowing what you liked best (or not at all) about the last time we did this and how you think it could be better. Feel free to beg those regulars you want to see post and shower them with offers of your undying love or promises of virtual applause. Whatever you have to say go ahead and comment on below!

Lazy Lightning Meetup: Ramadan in Burnsville, MN

A few weekends ago I was at Ramadan buying meat and having lunch. The owner and I had a chat and I came up with the brilliant idea to host the first Lazy Lightning Meetup in several years. Instead of doing it the way we used to, through awkward WordPress plugins and/or e-mail chains, I’ve setup a Facebook event page which is open to the public. Simply signup through there (you can e-mail me if you are really and truly do not use FB but, for the sake of my sanity, I’d really prefer you just use Facebook instead.

From the Facebook event page:

Meet up with your favorite Lazy Lightning readers and eat some of the best Indian food in Minnesota and certainly South of the River.

For those of you interested there’s a full service meat counter in the grocery next door offering chicken, goat, lamb, and beef cut to your specifications for prices unmatched anywhere.

Cost: $8.00/person

As an added bonus, thanks to the generosity of reader “dm”, we have one free buffet for one lucky attendee who also states in a comment below that they plan to attend and actually does! All you have to do is post a comment below, nothing fancy, stating your plan to attend and you’re entered. The contest will run through April 1st, 2012 giving people plenty of time to enter!

Have you ever eaten at Ramadan or bought anything from their meat market? If so what did you think? Are you excited to attend the first Lazy Lightning Meetup in several years? Who do you most want to meet and who are you planning to run and hide from? Whatever you have to say go ahead and comment on below and get your chance at a free meal courtesy of “dm”!

Lazy Lightning’s Best Comment in 2011

Similar to what we did at the end of 2009 and 2010 I am putting up a slew of comments which were penned in 2011 to a vote to determine which is the best of the year. The winner has the choice of eating lunch with me at a location of my choosing (on me) or a $10 gift certificate to some SOTR restaurant I can find to agree to fork over a freebie ;-)

While technically MSPD had 3 of the top 5 (5 of the top 10) who wants to see him get multiple chances to win (not like it would help him win anyway)? Also, Gene Suh, owner of Valley Tap had the most votes at 17 but I deemed him ineligible for a win. As such the comments below were selected by taking the top 5 distinct user rated comments for the year (up votes minus down votes). There were several ties (a two way for 1st and a three way for 4th place) and as such 6 total comments are up for voting.

Please read the following comments and choose one and vote on it below. The vote will run through January 7th, 2012 at 11:59:59 PM.

1. Dave’s suggestion on proper business posting etiquette. [15 votes]

1. MSPD loves thumbs down. [15 votes]

3. lefty’s daily BPAC employee work schedule. [11 votes]

4. kelly’s surprise over the AVFD drama. [10 votes]

4. sui generis’ ‘stupidity tax’. [10 votes]

4. dsw’s note that domestic violence calls are the worst for the police. [10 votes]

2011 Comment of the Year

In addition to the winner of the best comment, one commenter below will win another $10 gift cert (two distinct winners only) so make sure you vote and comment on below in order to be entered. So go ahead and vote and then comment on below and may the best commenters win.

I want to personally thank each and every reader, commenter, friend, family member, public servant (good or bad), restaurant owner (good or bad), journalist, and especially the silly astroturfers for all they do to make this site what it is. If it weren’t for the people out there there wouldn’t be much to talk about and certainly wouldn’t be any discussion. I wish you all a happy New Year and hope you continue to spread the word about Lazy Lightning and all the fun the cronies have here.

What were your favorite posts in 2011? What did you like best about the site (comments, changes, topics, etc)? What would you like to see come in the future? We have voting on best comment of the year coming up on Sunday, do you have a favorite already? Whatever you have to say go ahead and comment on as I’d love to hear what you have to say.
