How much do you have to work to fill up your tank? According to this “hours for gallons” calculator, I have to work 2.5 hours to fill up my car with a tank of gas.
I’m so very glad that we’ve gone from paying ~$250/month for gas to ~$65. After running through the calculator I found out that at my last job I was working almost one entire day a week to pay for the gas to get to and from work! When I mentioned that stat to Kim she just said, “that’s sick.” No shit.
How much are you working to fill up your tank?

In cold, hard cash I spend about $57/tank which gets me by for exactly one week. Quite the difference from when I was 18 and a tank would cost about $15. Sadly, that’s only been a decade.

Two years ago, thinking this was coming I bought a Scion. Put the Durango in the garage except for lake trips and pulling/hauling stuff. That improved my gas consumption from about 15 gallons per week down to 5. I do get a tremendous amount of crap from people about the scion, as it sits in an “executive lot” next to alot really expensive cars. Throw in the cost of the car at $14.000 or so and the Scion is actually far more economical than the few Prius’s I see down there too.

Sank,
Nice work. I’m not quite sure why new cars get such poor gas mileage. I am apparently to be impressed by the Prius when my $9999 2002 Saturn got 35 to 40 mpg regularly. I wish that car hadn’t been such a piece of shit or I’d still have it now…
BTW, I fixed your comment and deleted the second one — just so you know.

It pays to have a smaller tank on this test. Although that just means more stops to refuel.

Ed, depends on your gas consumption I suppose.

Thanks for editing. I type faster than I read, and your site doesn’t allow posters to edit. BTW I edited one of your last week as well, was going to mention, and suddenly remembered how much I like Tater Tots at the same time…
Needless to say, I forgot.
BTW. My WII expert Eric congratulates on your acquisition and highly recommends Mario Cart as “could be the best game of all time”.
My older more edgy son still prefers the XBox and Assassin’s Creed.

Sank, I have some reservations grounded in solid reasoning (in my mind at least heh) why I don’t allow posters to edit. If you ever want something changed, just e-mail me or post another comment — I’ll fix it, no worries.
Mario Kart isn’t the best game of all time but I am certainly enamored with its existence. I played for over 8.5 yesterday (not all MK mind you) and at least 6 hours the night before with everyone else. There is a funny, drunken, Wii playing video on YouTube of Laura and I but I’ll let you track it down and find it if you want to see it ;)

It takes me 2.5 hours to fill the tank.
I brought it a little further though, as that figure doesn’t really have any value to me.
I work for .27 hours (16 minutes) every day (before taxes) to pay for my gas to/from work that day.
Think of it another way: The time I spent figuring this out just paid for my gas today. :)
