Pints of Beer originally uploaded by Simon Cocks
According to the Apple Valley Chamber of Commerce, Minneapolis’ Crooked Pint Ale House is joining Valley Tap House in building a sister location in Apple Valley.
Located over by the world famous and unbelievably incredible Pizza Ranch by the most pointless SuperTarget ever and the 5 million dollar, city-owned liquor store that has more neon than Las Vegas, this is the latest addition to an area which the Chamber calls an area “gaining steam”.
From the article:
Apple Valley will soon have a reputation of even a greater variety of Craft Beers on tap.
Crooked Pint Ale House, currently not far from the Gutherie in downtown Minneapolis, will be building just to the east of the new Pizza Ranch just south of Target on Pilot Knob. They are known for their bands as well as for example in a few weeks they have Navarro who wrote “We Belong” for Pat Benatar. They are awaiting the public hearing process for final approval. They have over 35 Tap Beers, plus all the scores of bottled options. Their menu is varied from a Peanut Butter Bacon Lucy Burger to Alaskan Ale Burger; sandwiches and dinner from Walleye to NY Strip, potroast, meatloafs etc.
With the new traffic signal there, Pizza Ranch, GoodScents Deli, the Liquor Store and Think Bank, this area seems to be gaining steam if you were thinking about opening a business in this new commercial sector.
The menu is very similar to just about any other bar that’s serving a mix of out-of-the-bag and barely house-made items. While this new place will definitely and directly impact VTH’s business, we’ll have to see how the food does as, currently, VTH’s menu (and it’s sad to say this) is probably the best in Apple Valley and their beer specials are impossible to beat.
What do you think about a new restaurant opening in Cobblestone? After many years of being totally vacant, are you surprised and/or happy that it’s starting to build up and finally add a non-national chain restaurant? Do you think it will fare as well as VTH or end up the redheaded step child of its sister location like Burger Jones? Whatever you have to say about this one go ahead and comment on as I’d love to hear your thoughts.

I Can’t decide which is funnier:
The COC’s example of “big time” status this place will bring to AV because a band containing the surviving member of Lowen & Navarro (who wrote that song in 1984 that Pat Benatar covered) will play at their Uptown location.
Or the writer who wrote this press release who can’t seem to put cohesive sentences together.
Can’t wait for opening night. Maybe they’ll bring in another “national” act to open this place with a bang!

It’ll never work until they put a skyway across Pilot Knob from the transit station.

Sounds interesting. I don’t know if this location would have that much impact on VTH, though. You’d have to drive past VTH to get to Cobblestone, but who knows.
While it may be encouraging to see a couple of new businesses come in to the development, I’ll bet the guy that owns all those empty storefronts that were built originally wishes someone who lease one of the spaces (or more) rather than build another stand-alone business.

I like how the writer point out that it is “currently not far from the Guthrie” as if to add some class to the place. It is also, “currently not far from The Gay 90′s” and “within walking distance from Deja Vu”.
This is just a sister restaurant of the Green Mill chain, nothing more or less. If you like the bar food at Green Mill, which is about 4% better than Champps, then check out the beer list and maybe this might be a place you would want to go.
Based on the current Crooked Pint “conveniently located near Dreamgirls strip bar”, expect a food and beer menu that are both inferior to the Valley Tap House, and also more expensive.

I’d personally love to know where this “Gutherie” theater is, as I’ve only ever been to the Guthrie, and this one with its extra vowels must be superior. I just can’t believe that this was published as a release from anyone, let alone a governing body you’re supposed to take seriously.

I like the most pointless Target ever, pretty convenient for me. I guess I have never realized the amount of neon at your favorite LQ store, as I go there for the harder to find beers and selection in the immediate area. Doubt I will ever step a foot in the Ranch or this Ale House though.

Yawn. Can no one think of anything original food-wise for the southern suburbs? It’s the SOS everytime (same old sh*t). Not to mention the Sandra Lee tendencies (semi-homemade).

Is Sandra Lee Sarah’s evil twin?

Most pointless SuperTarget ever? I don’t get your point on that one, Bill.

There are long-running, inside jokes here (neon signs, SuperTarget, etc); sorry that it wasn’t obvious for all.
P-Funk, do a search on the site. I then, and still now, don’t believe there is any need for two SuperTargets in Apple Valley as they’re both empty all of the time.

Funny you say they are empty all of the time, considering as of a few years ago the first AV target was top in the state in sales. Not sure how that happens when the stores are always empty. Also seems weird I have to wait in line to checkout at the Pilot Knob store, should be able to breeze through there no problem without people in the store, unfortunately it is not the case more so than not. Sample size: 1-2 trips per week on average.

It could be because, on any given day, they have 3 or 4 aisles of 20+ open.
February 27th, 2013 at 8:57 am
Those 20 aisles are for Christmastime and weekend peak hours. Every time I go to any Target they only have 25% of the registers open. AV ones are hardly different.
That said, I realize the pointless comment was more silly than an indictment. It is not like the government funded the Target store. Or did it? I am only half joking with that question.
February 27th, 2013 at 9:27 am
Even if they had 1 register open, I shouldn’t have to wait if it were empty right? the weekday I bought the BBQ sauce there were more than 4 open. Maybe the cars in the parking lot were all from the park and ride I guess.

As much as I don’t like the Cobblestone neighborhood itself, the location is very convenient for Farmington residents.
I will probably try the place once, as long as they bring over the same tap beer selection that they have at their current location.

I don’t understand why Target doesn’t install any do-it-yourself checkouts. Grocery stores do, WalMart [evil empire] does, why not Target? I use them whenever I can, and I usually only have a few things to ring up anyway.
February 27th, 2013 at 10:08 pm
I’ve wondered about the self check-outs, as well. They use them at the downtown store, so I don’t understand why they aren’t in the suburban stores. I hate that there are so few check-outs open when I am there!
February 28th, 2013 at 7:47 am
If you’re referrind to Downtown Mpls, they don’t have them there unless they’re hidden really well. I’m in there at least once a week…I’d use them if they did.
February 28th, 2013 at 1:30 pm
Nationally, so I have read, self-checkouts are being removed from stores. Not sure why, but I did use one recently that was still yelling at the previous shopper to choose their method of payment; in other words, they had stolen their groceries. The clerk who restarted the thing for us said it happened often.

SOTR has a new dining option I’m looking forward to trying: the Fluegel’s in Rosemount now has a freezer next to the front door with Heggie’s Pizza.
February 28th, 2013 at 5:31 pm
What’s so special about Heggie’s, anyway? I’ve never eaten it, but some places make a point out of saying they have it.
February 28th, 2013 at 5:33 pm
Tim, it’s a foodie-cult thing. Guarantee, this will get a response with a detailed list of “fresh this” and “lots of toppings” that, but it’s just a frozen pizza.
(p.s. — there was a sidebar writeup about it in the recent Minnesota Monthly “Best Pizzas” edition).
February 28th, 2013 at 7:39 pm
Heggie’s website is one of the worst I’ve ever seen.

I didn’t have anything planned for dinner last night, so I went ahead and picked one up — the “Six Pack” with sausage, pepperoni, Canadian bacon, and regular bacon along with two kinds of cheese.
I immediately could tell why so many bars have it — it was without question the saltiest pizza I’d ever eaten. I was wanting a beer myself after having a slice. It wasn’t just from the meat and cheese either.
The toppings were very generous, so I’ll give it that. The crust was thin and somewhat crispy, and there wasn’t much sauce, so those are pros or cons depending on your taste (I’m okay with both, though thin crust is not my favorite).
Overall, though, it isn’t something I’d go out of my way to have again.

MSPD, the self check-outs are on the skyway level. I avoid checking out downstairs at all costs!
March 5th, 2013 at 9:40 am
@Tracy, thanks for that tip. I’ve walked through that entry a million times and have never noticed. I guess I’d better start paying attention.
