Similar to the Dynamic Dakota County Inmate Data Dashboard I created recently, this is a dynamic and graphical representation of the data available via the Scott County Jail Roster Search.
BUYER BEWARE: the data used to generate this report is fluid in nature and I make no guarantees as to the accuracy of the reporting that lies below. That said, this data is updated regularly and the charts are updated along with it. Please feel free to check back as often as you like and I’d love to hear suggestions on charts you’d like to see added:

Dakota Inmate Dashboard

January 31st, 2010 at 7:35 pm
As of this post there are 246 inmate records in the Scott County inmate dashboard dataset. They do not have nearly as many going in and out as Dakota nor is the data the same (e.g. no ethnicity, no clear arresting agency).
There are several caveats to the data above:
1. The agencies are limited. I removed random ones like DOC (Department of Corrections?), MSP (no idea), Other, etc.
2. The charges chart is limited to the first charge for each inmate. These charges are not listed in any discernible order (date, severity, etc) so I just took the first one (some have up to 8). This is obviously just an interesting footnote, nothing to take ultra seriously.
3. The bookings by day is different than the Dakota County arrests by day.
—
There are plenty of other nuances that I’m not listing for time’s sake. This data is updated 3 times a day (Dakota County gets updated 3x a day but has an intermediate pull to fill in missing data three other times) and seems fairly stable. Sometimes the pictures are missing but other than that it should be ok.
The inmate images on their site are one large pic for front facing and side facing. I had to do some fun scripting to pull out only the front facing image. I suppose depending on how they take the photo, the autocropping may not be perfect. It seems to work for the most part.
If you have any questions please let me know.

Thanks for doing this! I wonder if MSP is Minnesota State Patrol.

Great work Bill! Good luck with the birth of your child.

This could prove interesting. Is there any consistence in the data so that, stay quarterly you might be able to provide a chart that has Scott County compared with Dakota County? I.e. just off the bat the ages seem more diverse than Dakota County.

Mikeh,
I’d have to do some research into that question. The ages and sexes are definitely comparable and I could certainly do a report on that. The rest of the data, well, I’d have to watch it over time and see how things progress.
I really need to contact Scott County and ask them about the data they provide (if someone else wants to do it, feel free to report back here) so I can provide stuff that’s more meaningful.

The gal currently in the top spot, Florence Wright, looks like she’s topless. I wonder what the story is there. The charge has something to do with stolen propery. Maybe she stole the shirt she was wearing and they had to take it for evidence.

The ups and downs of “bookings by day” alternate days. Weird.

I am now limiting the dataset like I do with Dakota County. There are ~650 records in the reporting dataset and 1603 since January when I started.
Just for comparison there are 3809 in Dakota County’s all-time dataset and it reports on ~1150 inmates. The limits use the same amount of time so it would appear that Dakota has at least 2x as many inmates going through the system.

Google has broken the dashboard widgets. Ugh.
July 30th, 2010 at 9:36 am
1. Google has fixed the issues but I have to recreate all the dashboard widgets to get them working again. The dashboards should be fully operational by the end of the weekend.
2. Scott County hasn’t updated since the 26th. Working on that too. Ugh.

Scott County has disabled my easy scrape so now I have to rewrite the code a bit to work around what they have done. Cute.
July 30th, 2010 at 3:49 pm
Slowly getting this back up and working. Bear with me.
July 30th, 2010 at 8:17 pm
I got all the charts working again but the data being pulled is currently incomplete due to some changes on Scott County’s side. I’ll fix that later this weekend. Otherwise the pictures and the majority of the data driving the dashboard are working properly.

The link to the Scott County Jail Roster search should be changed to:

BTW, thanks for providing the info presented here, and for Dakota County. I enjoy browsing the photos, looking for anyone I might know. So far I have not recognized anyone.

3. Glad you find the inmate dashboards useful.

Two of the dashboard items are broken because I haven’t fixed the code which scrapes the data out of the raw files. They’ll remain broken until I fix them. I planned on doing it months ago but it’s fallen by the wayside.
I’ll do it in the next couple of days.

Oops, when I updated this for 2011 I forgot to remove the temporary inmate number push and thus it’s been running over the same 12 inmates since the 1st. My bad. It’s fixed and updating again.

‘MSP’ stands for bookings by the Minnesota State Patrol. It may be worthwhile to add those back in if they have been removed. Their bookings will offer some of the better mugshots… Haha just a thought. Thank you Kindly

It only removes them from creation of the charts above, not from the creation of the reporting dataset itself. Thus the photos are all those that are available.

Forgot to update this for 2013 and it dropped a lot of the data which drives the dashboard. It’ll begin updating over the next few days and all should be well again.
