Last week’s poll asking if you’ve ever been affected by a product recall revealed an even 50/50 split. I guess before the Tylenol thing I would have said no even though I was almost certainly affected even if I didn’t know. I suppose I need to start paying more attention to those things and allow companies to violate my personal privacy by signing up with them for product information…
This week’s poll asks what kind of bagel you like most. As you all probably know we had a baby a week ago and we’ve been a little too busy to do any real cooking. Thankfully we’ve had a lot of help from extraordinary friends (you know who you all are–we’re so grateful) who have provided us with food and the necessary helping hands while I finish up this quarter’s final assignments. So, in addition to the meals these wonderful people have brought us, it was requested that I buy a bunch of bagels for breakfasts and lunches. So I went to the store (I probably should have went to that bagel place in the gas station in Apple Valley but I was admittedly lazy–for good reason) and picked up a bunch of refrigerated bagels in various styles.
Now, I prefer blueberry or everything bagels but my wife prefers cinnamon raisin or Panera’s cinnamon crunch with hazelnut cream cheese (especially so). Being that this is more about him and her than me, I got her the cinnamon raisin and picked up honey wheat and tomato basil (figuring they’d be ok for lunches). I was a little disappointed in the selection and really need to rectify this situation by shopping elsewhere if we need more before my parents arrive next weekend. If anyone has suggestions on where, in the South Metro, I can get a decent bagel please let me know!

Toasted sesame seed bagels are the best, bar none!

Everything bagel, but Asiago is a close second.

Onion bagels are my favorite, followed by everything. I definitely go for the savory bagels over the sweet ones.

Tim, we have the exact same taste in bagels! I like a savory spread on mine as well. Onion & chive, jalapeno or pimento/olive cream cheese are my favorites. I haven’t tried too many different bagel shops, but I like both the Apple Valley offerings – Big Apple and Bruegger’s. Lou, the owner at Big Apple is a sweetheart and Tom at Bruegger’s is a great guy. I try to hit both of them up. They were hard hit during the low carb craze a few years back.

Meh, if I have an option of nothing or a bagel… I tend to pick nothing. When I do have a bagel, it’s usually because the wife wants some and I make a sandwich out of one I get for me.

I especially love the Jalapeno, with honey oat for breakfast. Also, grocery store versions don’t even come close to the quality of the specialty shops – Einstein or BABs especially

Salt bagel with plain cream cheese, lox and capers. Brueggers is fairly reliable, but I don’t think they’re excellent bagels.

Everything Bagel with low fat green olive cream cheese. My company’s cafeteria has a bagel bar every morning with fresh Breuggers bagels. They make their own cream cheese flavors including my fave–green olive. YUM.

I have not found real bagels in the cities. Common Root has received acclaim for their bagels, but they sold us old, hard, dry ones twice. Therefore, I make our bagels once a month and freeze them. I make sesame seed and sometimes everything. They make really yummy egg sandwiches for breakfast.

Bill, the reason for the high “other” vote – OMG, you forgot sesame!!!

Never had one, sorry!

The Cinnamon Sugar from Brugger’s is pretty magical when hot from the oven, but I’ll almost always take an everything.

We’ve beaten this dead horse on here before, but I think Common Roots bagels are worth a try if you haven’t already (respectfully dissenting from sandy). I’ve had them probably 20 times now (always plain with lox, cream cheese and capers) and can only remember one time when it was too chewy. Other than that, they are consistently good in my experience.
sandy, have you tried St. Paul Bagelry? They are the other place in MSP that, for years, has received numerous accolades. I’m just never up in that area, so have little personal experience.

Thanks! I will give them a try.

Bagels are a waste of dough. I’ll take a good apple fritter any day.

I’ve been buying St. Paul Bagelry bagels almost exclusively for two years and don’t see changing anytime soon. Definitely the best bagels I’ve had. I usually get blueberry or cranberry, but everything has been good.
Whole Foods carries them, but Seward Co-op (and I’m sure most coops) have them for a $1 cheaper.

While overall I love the ‘everything’ bagel with a little plain cream cheese, if you add some Lox on top of that, you have an AWESOME breakfast. If all that shows up are plain bagels, then smother in in Honey Walnut and you’re good to go..
Now, back to my boring cheerios, because it’s healthier.

Are you talking about Peak Bagel in the gas station? Is it still there? I remember their bagels being decent actually, but I haven’t been there in a long time.
I like jalapeno bagels or anything spicy.

Oops, I got confused (long story). It’s Big Apple Bagel, and I believe it’s still there.

Multigrain for me and my daughter. She likes to make little pizzas with them.
February 8th, 2010 at 6:16 pm
Yeah, I sneak in the whole grains when I make mine.

i like the bagels a the place by the gas station. the mrs likes the fo fo type, i go for the he-man stuff. super ‘t’ has einstein’s with a limited selection. byerlys has a good selection. in another life i’d bring a doz’ to work as they were fresh from the eagan store. as far as what you put on them, the sky’s the limit. toasted with peanut butter, any salad, cheese, meat, lay it on me and i’ll give it a go. last night actually we had einstein’s, toasted with tuna salad and pepper cheese for dinner:) mine was everything and the mrs’s was sesame!
