Last week’s poll asked if you love winter, especially following this one. While “Yes” had the most votes, the number of people who switched due to this year alone put “No” in the winning spot for hating on winter. Even with everything melting I still hate it and cannot wait for 90s and sunny.
This week’s poll idea came after eating a slice of homemade pumpkin pie last night. While we have had the debate of using canned vs. fresh pumpkin to fill the pie, we have never discussed other pie fillings. While not a really a dessert person there are numerous pies I love to eat: apple, pumpkin, lemon meringue, coconut and banana cream, and the list goes on and on.
Last night’s pumpkin pie was beautifully baked, seasoned perfectly, and while only covered in Cool Whip it was still one of the best pies in the world lovingly made by my mother. Yay for mom’s. It came after a home cooked rendition of Thanksgiving dinner–served in March. What better way to cap that wonderfulness off than pie?
So what kind of pie is your favorite? Do you have multiple favorites? Which ones do you prefer to eat out to enjoy vs. which do you prefer to make at home? Are you more of a straight filling person or do you like meringue or cream fillings better? Whatever you have to say about this one go ahead and comment on below and then vote on the sidebar and let us know what you think!
After you do both of those things feel free to check out our expired polls in the archive or read through the previous posts about polls here.

I voted Apple. Nothing like being around the house while my mother cooked an apple pie, then eating it while it’s still a bit warm, with really good vanilla ice cream on the side.
Still, I do adore pumpkin pie too, although not with Cool Whip, but freshly-made whipped cream.

Coconut cream here (as I love all things coconut), but I like every other kind of pie out there that I can think of too.

Pumpkin or key lime, otherwise I don’t really like pie. Pie crust grosses me out.

I voted for pumpkin, because you made me hungry for it by your writing… But I really do adore Chocolate Silk also. I make a recipe that says it is from W A Frost (although I don’t think it is on the menu there anymore) and take it to just about any event I need to bring a treat to because people have started requesting it. It is scrumptous!

Not a pie fan either. If I have to have a piece, it would probably be apple. Meringue is just gross.

Is none the same as other? I LOVE Mincemeat pie. And I’ve never seen it done any way, but homemade. You can buy canned filling, but it isn’t as good. I’m the only person I know who makes it, my grandma used to, so I just make it for myself.
Second favorite is Sour Cream and Raisin. My mom makes it once and awhile, and it is soooo good.
I’m really just a huge fan of pie. I also love Banana Cream, Chocolate, and Pumpkin/Sweet Potato.

Has to be GOOD pie. Fresh. Real ingredients. Crisp, well-browned, flavorful crust – none of this pasty-white underbaked stuff (dm, I suspect the underbaked stuff might be the reason you find crust gross). All butter; NEVER shortening – the French, who are pastry experts, would never dream of using shortening. The crust should be good enough that you could roll out your scraps with some sugar and make cookies from it.
Cool Whip is suitable only for…I don’t know…patching tires, maybe?

bb, what’s Dutch Apple? Is it regional? Does that mean it has streusel instead of a top crust?
March 20th, 2011 at 2:15 pm
Sandy, I have found every pie crust ever to be gross. No matter how it’s made. Shortening, lard, butter, ick. Not even my grandma’s, which everyone else loved. Not in europe, south america, mexico, never found one I liked.
I like stuff with graham crackers, etc. That’s not pie crust, it’s like a cookie topped with filling.

s, i’m not sure what the crust is called, but here’s the recipe from cooks.com
DUTCH APPLE PIE TOPPING
1/2 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. butter (butter) melted and blend with sugar, then add
1 c. flour, blend well
This is good on blueberry or other fruit pies. Sprinkle mixture over pie filling instead of top crust and bake as usual.
the mrs used to make what she called blueberry buckle with the same topping on it.
very good.
sounds like dm doesn’t get out much:) i thought i was the only shut in on lz ltg’s list.

I’m not much of a dessert eater, but I love pie. Fruit pies…apple, peach, blueberry…with really good crust are my favorite, but I also love pumpkin pie anytime from Thanksgiving through Christmas. Once a year, I have to have a piece of pecan pie with whipped cream. I don’t like meringue and I’m not much of a graham-cracker-crust person, but I do like the lemon supreme and apple supreme from Baker’s Square because they’re both made with regular crust and whipped cream rather than meringue. I like both coconut cream and banana cream, but I couldn’t eat a whole piece; one bite of either of those is plenty for me. I’m probably the only person around who doesn’t care for chocolate/French Silk pie; I like chocolate, just not in pie form.
Now I want pie. :)

My mother-in-law’s blue berry! It would stop a war! Unfortunately, no longer available…. only very fond memories.

bb, ah, yes. Streusel. A lovely thing on many baked goods. Actually, there is a cookie that is made entirely of streusel – I can’t remember the name of it, but they have them a Rustica sometimes. But especially good on fruits, I agree.

I have to disagree with Sandy about the butter-only pie crust. My preference is a lard or lard/butter crust (bonus points when it’s made lovingly by a german grandmother). As for favorite pie, it’s a toss up between blueberry or banana cream.
March 20th, 2011 at 6:14 pm
Oh, and I made a pumpkin cream pie last Thanksgiving and it was delish. I think I liked it better than regular pumpkin pie.
March 20th, 2011 at 6:30 pm
I like the classics, apple and pumpkin, ok but I love key lime pie. That and my moms lemon meringue. My favorite way to eat pie is a piece of frozen key lime dipped in chocolate. Yum

I’ve tried to like lard crusts; something about the mouthfeel turns me off. I like lard in other applications, such as tamales, though. Maybe it’s because I didn’t grow up with lard crusts???

For a favorite, I guess I’d have to say apple. I haven’t ever had a piece of apple pie and wanted to spit it out. I have other types. I love a good banana cream pie, or coconut cream pie or blueberry, strawberry. Make a good flaky crust for a win with just about any.
March 21st, 2011 at 12:16 am
Hmmm… Don’t polls like this usuallyhave a category for “other”? I really like a nice pear and blueberry pie. I also prefer a butter crust, but won’t turn away a shortening crust.
March 21st, 2011 at 7:39 am
I will have to vote for the pie you did not list.. French Silk..
- I’m not a fan of fruit pies that change the texture/consistency of their original form.. blargh.. ick, or really I guess any pie other than french silk.
March 21st, 2011 at 4:28 pm
pecan, peach, strawberry-rhubarb, or my wife’s deep dish apple.
I hate cream pies and most chilled or frozen pies, except for a certain chilled strawberry cream pie my mom makes.
March 21st, 2011 at 7:55 pm
Sweet potato pie is my favorite. I like most any berry pie. Most fruit pies. Not a big fan of cream-filled pies or pudding-based pies.

CHERRY!

I like any sort of pie, excepting French Silk. So long as there is flavor and texture, a decent crust, the flavor is not overshadowed by the sweetness, and it’s not an excuse for HFCS innundation…
My favorite pie, bar none, is the Rhubarb Custard from Sarah Jane’s Bakery. My mom used to make this in the 70′s and 80′s, and this is the closest I have come to the pie of my youth. Actually, I haven’t seen any other bakery make this, so…

I have to agree with most of dm’s posts. I have never had a pie crust that I enjoyed – lard, pastry, whatever…it is nasty and best left behind. Meringue is repulsive. I do enjoy a pie crust made from things like smashed graham crackers.
Kassie – Wow, you managed to mention the two grossest things ever attributed to “pie”…mincemeat and sour cream & raisin.
I like cherry pie but I would have to say pumpkin is my favorite. Oh, and Cool Whip…best thing ever. LOVE IT! I stick a tub in the freezer and will eat it like ice cream…or a dollop in hot chocolate. DELICIOUS!
