Back in late August, The Wife and I began carefully planning and tracking our meals using recipes culled from across the Internet, in cookbooks on our shelves, and from personal family favorites. We’ve been doing this for two months now and have made some really great recipes including the incredibly gorgeous and very tasty muffulettas I wrote about over a month ago. Well, the cooking and experimenting has continued and I thought it would be nice to share some of the goodness with all of you.

So far we’ve made about 50 unique recipes (you can view the entire list here), many of which we’d never tried before. Out of those there have only been 5 we didn’t really care to make again: Herbs de Provence Grilled Steak, Tuscan Bread & Tomato Soup, Meatloaf with Hard Boiled Egg Inside, Feta Stuffed Mushrooms, Bacon Wrapped Tater Tots.
But there have been some really amazing ones which were not only super tasty but really quite easy to make:
The best part of all of this is that while The Wife was, at first, uncomfortable and stressed while making food at home, she really seems to have come into her own and has even modified her first recipe to add a little something to leave her mark on the dish! I didn’t think it would take such little time for her to have some real confidence in the kitchen but I’m really glad she does. Yay for The Wife!
On a related note, out of the last month and a half we’ve only eaten out on our own dime one time and while we’re not spending any more than we used to on groceries, we’re eating a ton better. I almost don’t miss going out to eat, especially when it can be going down the drain almost as quickly as it comes in.
But I’m always looking for new and exciting recipes to try–especially ones which may become new favorites. So what are some recent recipes you’ve made that you feel are worthy of a favorite notation? Have you made any recently that have blown you away so much that you just can’t wait to run out and buy the ingredients again? Whatever you have to say about this one go ahead and comment on as I’d love to hear your thoughts.

My boyfriend is a hunter and I get bored with the same venison stew/chili ideas. I got the itch for a curry and found this recipe on Field & Stream.

I used butternut squash that’s so in season right now. Now, I love everything, but my boyfriend LOVED this. He’s always impressed by my ability to dress up venison.

I find your list is very interesting in the capacity of how many meals actually contain “Veg” as the meat. My list (if I made one) would probably contain a lot more grilled daily meat to contribute to heart disease, and a lot less variations in descriptive words.

19 are “Chicken”
15 are “Veg”
14 are “Beef”
8 are “Pork”
2 are “Turkey”

Julie, that sounds excellent! I may have to try it with lamb or goat. Mmm.

OK, I’ll offer up a recipe we “go to” again and again. It works as an hors d’oeuvres, a breakfast dish, or a side. It’s easy to dial up the spice level to your taste. We always get complements when we serve it or bring it to a party. Here’s the original recipe:
“Uncle Henry’s Pie”
Grease an 8″ pie plate
4-eggs whipped
8-oz extra sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
2 4-oz cans of chopped (or whole) green chilies
Place chilies on the bottom of the pie plate
Add the whipped eggs
Add cheese on top
Bake 30-minutes at 325
It’s easy to modify by substituting your favorite chilies for the green chilies, add chili flakes or other favorite spices, top-off with your favorite salsa, etc. I love it for breakfast!

Unfortunately I’m not much help in this area. I’m more of a baker (if anything) than a cook, and almost everything I’ve made in the past few weeks has come from a box, can, or pouch.
Sad to see the Bacon Wrapped Tater Tots on the not to make again list. Those sounded and looked pretty fantastic. Was it more the cost / benefit in terms of preparing them, or the taste?

They were fine for me but The Wife was not a fan at all. No sense in making something again neither of us were raving about.

Glad you liked the Thai chicken so much. It’s a definite keeper. We love making that dish.

So happy you loved the Tuscan Baked Chicken as much as I did! It’s a standard in our house :)
