Last week’s poll asked whether you prefer paper or plastic when you’re grocery shopping. Even though some prefer those reusable grocery bags which harbor some bacteria, the majority responded either paper or both plastic and paper. We have a ready supply of reusable bags and when they’re in the car they get used, otherwise they end up right where we left them–empty.
This week’s poll come as a reminder to me that I need to stop being so lazy and get my butt back in the gym on a very regular basis. With a lot of traveling in the last month (PA, Vegas, and a geocaching trip with friends to South Dakota) we’ve been doing a lot of lazy eating and not much cooking. I have definitely begun to notice the lack of my usual eating habits taking its toll on me and my health. As such, it’s time to get back into the gym as frequently as humanly possible.
There are many reasons why I can’t go as often as I like, namely that I’m lazy but also work, school, the Rooster, and any number of other excuses I can come up with so I don’t have to go. Even though I haven’t recently been going much more than the 12 times a month I need to go to get my discount, I have been making a concerted effort to do everything to get back on track to be in the gym at least 4 days a week.
Last week I bought two new swimsuits for the summer. There’s nothing I love more than swimming laps outside in the summer. It’s a great way to start the day and it’s a great stress reliever. On Wednesday we took advantage of a 30% “deal” at Kohl’s and I picked up a new pair of sneakers. I hate the treadmill but at least a new pair of shoes helps ease me back onto it.
With a new goal of at least 4x a week at the gym, I have to wonder how often all of you go and workout. Do your habits change based on the time of the year? When you go how much time do you spend actually working out? Whatever you have to say about this one go ahead and comment on as I’d love to hear what you have to say.

I’ve been going 4x week for quite some time (regardless of time of year) and although my preference is to go to step aerobic classes, generally I can’t find four that work in my schedule each week so on the days I can’t find a class, to the treadmill I go. The classes run an hour and when it’s the treadmill, between 45 and 60 minutes followed by abs, pushups and stretch (about an hour total).
Good luck getting back in the groove.

I do P90X, which equates to about 4-5 times a week.
I can do it at home and on the road. Very satisfied with the results, and I enjoy the program.

Just to balance out your answers – I never work out. We go for walks and I’ll walk in the skyway over lunch sometimes but that’s about it. I’ve gone through spurts where I’ve joined a gym or had a membership to a yoga studio, but haven’t done anything organized since Annie was born. I definitely get more exercise in the summer from going on almost nightly walks. I don’t feel or look noticeably different when I do work out, which is basically why I stopped.

I work out at Lifetime 4-5 times a week. I enjoy the variety of classes and making friends in them. I like to vary it up with a couple strength based and cardio classes per week. My favorites are Zumba, Strike, Non Stop Cardio Circuit and Barbell Strength. I do plug in a Yoga class when the time permits as well. I try to do different classes each week so I don’t get bored and my muscles are always getting a different work out each week. I also walk my dogs everyday for at least 30 minutes. Before we joined Lifetime, I did P90X and really liked that system. I work from home and I need to get out during the day to actually be with real people!

I hate working out inside. I do it from time to time, but for the most part, I don’t do it.
And I hate the cold, so I don’t work out outside when it is cold.
So, I only work out once and a while when the weather sucks. But from May-October I “work out” all the time. Except, I don’t work out. I ride my bike. I go on walks. I hike. I play frisbee golf.
Today I rode my bike 20 miles (even though is was crappy out.) That’s a much better workout than I could ever get inside. I just wish it wouldn’t snow again next week so I could keep it up.

I’m with Erin and Kassie. I have probably belonged to healthclubs 5-6 times in my life and managed to keep it up for several months each time, but I find that type of excercise to be miserable. The clubs stink, there is the sweat left on the machines to contend with, you have to drag everything you’ll need along with you, etc.
Life is better than that. Therefore, I walk everywhere that I can, at a brisk pace. I carry things up and down the stairs at home one thing at a time. We’ve had our bikes serviced for this coming summer. We jump on a minitramp when feeling droopy. We do most of our own home and garden maintenance. I do stretching and use small weights somewhat regularly. At one time I did all of my housework wearing ankle weights – maybe I’ll start that again.
I would rather choose to be energetic in my daily life than be strapped like an animal to a dreary routine in an excercise factory – and pay for the “privilage”!
That said, could I do better at excercising? Of course.

I’ve been trying to do something active 4 days a week as part of my weight loss routine.. It might be biking/training for the upcoming MS150 in June, I might get out and jog, as I’d like to run a 5K this summer, or it might be as simple as taking a walk with the gal and the furkids.
We have a treadmill and a weight set in the basement, and while I try and avoid the mill in the non-snowy months, I’ll hit up the weights if it’s raining outside and I cant get out.
I used to belong to Lifetime a few years back when I lived about a mile away, but now, there is not one close to me, and I can’t justify the added expense when I can get outside, or have stuff at home to get the same workout. The only thing I could benefit from, would be a few sessions with a personal trainer at a gym, but that’s life I guess.
It does become challenging at times to stay on your schedule when you get delayed getting home, and usually the first thing bumped for me is the workout, or else I’ll be eating supper close to 8, and just not have time to get anything else done around the house, or client work tended to.
I will give myself some credit for getting out most of the winter and jogging, unless it was insanely cold out, which is an accomplishment for me, as I hate anything to do with running, or I did. I had only known the treadmill run, which was dreadfully boring, however, getting outside was a great change, and actually was something I enjoyed.

Lately it has been all I can do to make my 12 visits a month to the Y. If my husband and I don’t make the 12 visits being members isn’t in our budget. It will only harder if the weather warms up. In college, I worked out 5-7 days a week, now I can barely make 3…not something I’m proud of.

I work out about 5 or 6 days/week in the summer, and 2 or 3 days/week in the winter. I don’t do as much in the winter because it’s either boring (elliptical) or miserable (outdoor walking/hiking) most of the time (unless I’m feeling rich enough to pay for Yoga in any given month!). In the summer I bike, hike, walk, and rollerblade. No gym for me right now; I prefer outdoor activities. But I’m thinking that I MIGHT join the Y next winter.
