Yes, we still have a landline and yes, even though we are on the DNC list and are diligent about not giving out our phone number to anyone who doesn’t need it (pizza places I’m looking at you), we still get the occasional spammy call from the veterans groups, politicians, and credit card scammers.
While I absolutely hate the veterans groups and politicians and want them all to be banned from calling anyone for the rest of time, I am usually amused by the scammers. If I happen to pick up the phone when they call I love hitting ’1′ to speak to a live rep, listen for the click as the VoIP connection to China or India kicks in and the person gets on to tell me ‘Hello, Card Member Services, what’s your credit card number or SSN?’ When I ask them repeatedly for their business name or where they are calling from, they hang up. Boo.
Well, recently we’ve been assaulted by a whole new scam which is failing big time. Someone clearly spent a lot of money setting up this scam as they’ve called no less than 6 or 7x in the last two weeks (and possibly even more). They sometimes know at least one person’s name in the house (The Wife’s) but the recording is disjointed and broken. It starts with someone who sounds human saying, “Is Bill there?” and then a click and it repeats it over and over and over and over again until you hang up. However, some of these calls start with “Is Bill there?” and then immediately ask for another person’s name instead: “Is Deborah there?” “Is Deborah there?” “Is Bill there?” So strange.
We are cheap with our landline and don’t have caller ID (not that I believe the scammers number would lead anywhere anyway) so I can’t do a look up that way and my random attempts at Googling for this scam failure have come up empty. I am totally blown away by the fact that not only is this scam broken, but it has continued for weeks. They have to be calling tens of thousands of people a day. Seriously how could this work at all when the recording is so very broken?
So my questions for you are these: do you still get scammer calls and what do you do about them? Have you received this particular scam or do you know anything about it? Do you think you should be empowered by the government to block more of these calls easily? Whatever you have to say about this one go ahead and comment on as I’d love to hear your thoughts.
