Out at JJ’s Bierstube in White Bear Lake for lunch. I saw this spot numerous times on my trips to the nearby restaurants.
Thinking that this was little more than a bar, I never stopped in. I was surfing around on the web and came across their website and checked their menu. Mmmm! Reasonable too, woot!
I went in at around 11:45, middle of the lunch rush hour, and found the place nearly empty save for two drunks at the bar and two elderly people drinking margaritas in a booth.
I came expecting to eat a brat or mett with sauerkraut ($1 off currently due to Oktoberfest) but ended up with their 1/2 chili 1/2 sandwich lunch special and a Paulaner Hefe-Weizen (also $1 off).
The chili was fairly good; not too spicy and not too runny but was lacking cheese and sour cream as I prefer. I suppose I could have asked but I needed something in my stomach to handle the Hefe ;) I’ll definitely be back for more of the chili — an unusual occurance for me.
The 1/2 sandwich was a Rachel. That came out soon after I finished my chili and was very well done. While the sauerkraut wasn’t the best I’ve ever had, the entire sandwich rounded out and I would definitely be back to enjoy this over Subway (which would cost 2x as much).
My service was fast and extremely friendly. My server even hopped out of the way while I nabbed photos of the bar.
Total tab was $10.20 before tip. Not bad at all with a tall beer ;)
