As I have written before, I am huge into John Sandford’s Prey series of novels. Two caching buddies, Chuck and Craig recommended them to me and I have been hooked ever since.
With vacation looming on the near horizon and knowing that I will be doing a ton of reading on our way there, back and also during, I figured I better stock up. We headed over to Half Price Books in Apple Valley tonight and I nearly cleared their shelves of the Prey novels. Because the names are so inane and nearly meaningless, I never have any idea which ones I have or don’t have so I figured I’d compile a list tonight and keep it on my phone for future use. If for some reason the note gets deleted at least I’ll have a post to keep it there forever :)

I just finished Night Prey which has been my third favorite so far. Because I was out of Prey novels I dug into Lee Child’s Bad Luck and Trouble from the Jack Reacher series and have been enjoying it so far noting that it has been a quick read (I’m 375 pages in since starting in the afternoon of June 30th).
I told Kim that I really hoped that I would be able to hold out till vacation started but at this rate I doubt it — maybe I’ll read one of Sandford’s other novels in the mean time. I hear that they aren’t as good as the Prey series but they should tide me over. Maybe a slower read will be good for me ;-)

I’m a huge, huge fan of John Sandford, I’ve met him several times at book signings as well. He’s a very nice guy. I actually starting reading him I think after his second Prey book and have kept up ever since, just got Phantom Prey at the Library yesterday. I can’t remember which is which, but for the most part I enjoyed them all, Lucas Davenport is a great character. Also, check out the “Kidd” series of books he’s done, I think there’s been 3 or so. About a bunch of hackers, not as good as the Prey series, but still enjoyable reads.
Besides John Sandford, these are the other authors I never miss a book from: Vince Flynn (another local guy, went to my high school), Nelson Demille, and Michael Connelly (probably my favorite author).
Good reading to ya!

P-Funk, are those books similar in content? Lee Child is almost identical (hardass, ex-cop (he’s actually an MP in most of them), killing, etc) and that’s probably why I enjoy him so much.

Michael Connelly is sort of similar, he has a character who is a cop, Harry Bosch, out in LA. Not really the same sort of character as Davenport, Bosch is more of a blue collar kind of guy. Whereas I think John Sandford books are very enjoyable reads, like not really deep thinkers, but still very good story telling, in a sort of fun way, Michael Connelly’s books seem to have a truer, darker edge to them, more realistic.
Vince Flynn books are sort of political thrillers, but on the same token not really, they do take place in political settings, Washington D.C., etc. and they do have a political edge to them, but the main character, Mitch Rapp, is a no holds barred CIA killer feared the world over who is pretty dang entertaining.
Nelson Demille has been around I think a long time and I’ve never read anything fom him I didn’t like but he’s not churning out new material all that quick (like Sandford does). His books are hard to pinpoint as his subjects vary so much, especially in his earlier work. His more recent stuff has settled down with the one resurfacing character, in this case an FBI agent, who tackles mostly terrorism in some creative storytelling.
Anywho, just my suggestions, everyone has their favs, those are mine.
