
Loyal reader bb stacker sent in some photos (thanks!) of the location of the upcoming Kyoto Sushi and Hibachi in Eagan. Details are few and far between but I did find mentions in a few of the locals:
The Pioneer Press which says, “At Town Centre Drive in Eagan, Kyoto Sushi is on the drawing board. Owner Xing Zhao would say only that the debut is still a few months away.”
ThisweekLive which reports, “Kyoto Sushi plans to begin construction at 1248 and 1250 Town Centre Drive in April, with an estimated opening date of August. The owner also owns other sushi restaurants in Woodbury, Coon Rapids, Champlin, and Toronto, Canada.”

Ok, what is the deal with the proliferation of Japanese and/or sushi restaurants in the TC? I am not complaining just wondering why all of a sudden in the past 2 years even the far reaches of the South Metro like Apple Valley suddenly have not one, but 3 Japanese/sushi places? WTF?
Downtown Mpls and Uptown are flooded with sushi joints….
Is this a latent discovery of raw fish attraction in the land of the Hot Dish?

I know, mulch. We’ve gone from having almost none ten years ago, to some five years ago, to having them all over the place now.
I mean, I know we’re generally behind the rest of the country when it comes to food, and I like sushi, but I don’t think every other new restaurant that opens needs to be Japanese. And “Kyoto?” Um, I’ve been there — it’s not a coastal city; it’s inland. It would be like naming a seafood restaurant in the U.S. after Pittsburgh.
Now this is making me want to hit up Zen Box for lunch, despite it being a bit of a haul…

Sushi doesn’t fill the same niche as fast food, though. It isn’t cheap or particularly fast, at least not if it’s any good (there are places where it can be those things, but not here).
I also want more restaurants that aren’t fast food, but I’d like a little more diversity. There’s plenty of places near me to get sushi already.

Of course it’s not the same niche (although it is for me, minus the drive through. Given the choice of McDonalds or the pre-packed sushi at Byerly’s, it’s a no-brainer, even if it’s $5/5 minutes more).
I totally agree with you that more and more diversity in the south metro would be nice.

tim, you’re a purist!! :) how about all nippon sushi, rising sun sushi or b+k’s real good sushi shit. my key is sushi land locked port o call or not. i may try it regardless of the name.

My point was really just wondering why there is suddenly a mushroom like explosion. My guess is that when someone courageous comes in and does it decently (Osaka in AV) then there is an explosion of copycatting. The discovery that making decent authentic food might actually play in the SOTR.
If you want Japanese fast food , someone should start a Yoshinoya type “Beef Bowl” restaurant here… combining Japanese food, america’s favorite meat and cheap prices… seems like a winner to me. I prefer grilled unagi eel in that sweet soy sauce marinade over rice for my cheap Japanese food, but somehow I doubt that would go over so big here
Another restaurant idea is the “Bento” phenomenon that sprouted in Portland Oregon… google bento and portland and see what you find… its another phenomenon that might work here… $5.95 for a takeaway bento box of teriyaki salmon or beef with rice, etc….
Actually sushi here in the TC can be very fresh, with Northwest having a hub here, fresh sushi fish is available daily, but the quality of what you get typically depends on the restaurant and how it is handled. The best joints like Origami and Fuji Ya in the city know how to do this, but that is also a function of turnover, which is why i am always a bit skeptical of eating sushi in a place that doesnt have the traffic.

Well, just got back from trying the lunch sushi at Kyoto and I have to say I’m not too impressed. It was late lunch, about 1:30pm, and while they did have a full group behind the sushi fridge, the waiter seemed to have a problem understanding my order – saba, sake, hamachi, and unagi with iced tea to drink. Asked about uni and quail egg (a particular favorite of mine) but they apparently didn’t have any.
Not sure if this is getting to be a regular thing or not, but all the sushi came out as one piece of each – I’m used to getting two pieces per order. Fish looked ok, but the sake and hamachi had a fishy taste to them, the saba looked a bit limp and the pickling had no bite to it, and the unagi was cold and lacked a wipe of eel sauce on it.
I asked how often they get fish in and (after repeating the question several times) was told it came in every 2-3 days.
I’m going to give them at least one more try before I make up my mind completely, but Osaka down in AV seems to be a better bet for me. Unfortunate too, since Kyoto is a ten minute drive and Osaka is a bit further away.

I noticed they were open, but have not been in. How long have they been open? Was this just opening day issues? Or have they been open long enough that they should have that worked out?

Yah, they’ve apparently been open since Saturday (8/8). Had been waiting to see an opening notice since I had heard they would be open mid-late August.
Noticed they had the OPEN sign up Sunday (8/9) afternoon on the way home from Ghengis Grill, but today was the first time I could get over there. I’m going to go back in about 2 weeks or so and see if what I hit was just things needing to get sorted out a bit.

A little OT here – has anyone tried Sawa over in Bloomington yet? I’ve been there twice for late lunch over the last few weeks and have been VERY impressed with the itamae on staff. The usual maki and gunkan-maki were superb but the first visit also got me a (not on the menu) wonderful order of hamachi-kama. The second visit was a surprise of fresh scallop done two different ways as well as some softshell crab.
In fact, I may just head over there later and grab some dinner just to be different…

My wife and I finally got around to trying Kyoto Sushi for dinner last night. We both got the AYCE dinner, like they offer at Akita in Woodbury (as the article that was linked to earlier describes, they’re owned by the same people).
While the decor on the inside is a little different, and Kyoto feels a little larger too, the two restaurants are pretty much the same in all respects. Even the menus are identical, with the name of the restaurant changed, and the interior layout (the bar in the center) is pretty close to Akita’s. The quality of the food is the same too — not the best you can find in the Twin Cities, but still quite good.
They need a website, though. I tried to find one last night and couldn’t.

The rolls at Kyoto Sushi were delicious! That was my first sushi experience and I went with a girlfriend who is Sushi Veteran. All went well, until we got our check.
We arrived at 5:00 PM on a Monday, and promptly asked our waitress about the Happy Hour specials (hey, it was rough weekend), which we were informed it was dollar tap beers. The only beer on tap was Sapporro and we immediately ordered two. Much to our surprise, our Sapporros were in these HUGE glasses (23oz)! After a few orders of rolls and a couple empty Sapporro glasses, we got our check. Come to realize, our TWO beers were $10! We looked over the drink menu and saw that Sapporro was listed as the only tap beer and was only in the 23oz size. We were also charged full price. Our waitress returned to collect the check, so we asked her for a correction on the beers. She said “No, you did not ask for Happy Hour Special.†I told her we were unaware that the Sapporro came in any other size and I showed her the drink menu. She then took it upon herself and clarified that the menu should actually say that the Happy Hour beer is in the same sized glass as our water glasses. I told her that was misleading and I would like to talk to the manager. She took our bill and arrived back at our table about ten minutes later, not the manger as I had requested. She then took mine and my girlfriend’s water glasses, put them next to the Sapporro glass and said, “We charge you $2, see, one, two†and stacked our water glasses on top of each other. She pulled the bill back out of her pocket and walked away, with a $4 charge for the beers. We paid our bill (minus a tip) and left with a few lessons learned.
First, when you go out for Happy Hour and want to order from the Happy Hour menu, one must be sure to say, “I want the Happy Hour special.†Oh, and another lesson learned: Kyoto Sushi has lost our business. Which is really unfortunate, as the food was delicious.

Do you know how much is a beer in bar?
5 buck ok?so if we think that eat out too much,we can stay home and eat,eat out that mean we accept the price ,go out and weight to penny,I think that to bad,I and my family went there last night,I spent only 220 $ for 9 person,that so good deal,so before we post our comment,pls think is good one or not ok?
One more thing, I am first time guy in Kyoto,so this is the truth,there a lot of people in there last night,so this is not the bad restaurant at all,don’t belive, come there will see how much in my true

Alyssa, we have had similar things happen at Akita in Woodbury, which I assume has the same owner/management.
Regardless of what Tri is trying to say above, this is not the way to treat customers. Its crappy service and while it is busy now, people will notice poor service and that will change.
Does anyone know if the same ownership group also owns the one in Apple Valley?

I had dinner at Kyoto last night with Ms. Lefty. We have been there at least a dozen times and the experience is always the same.
Service is typically from a waitperson in which English is a second language. They completely make up for some communication breakdowns with very attentive service, great food and amazing prices.
Last night we had the steamed edamame, which was very basic but done right, a Sushi roll and a few orders of Salmon Sushimi. As well, I had a 25 oz. Sapporro tap and the Ms. had a glass of red wine. Including a $7 tip, the bill was $40.33. They had a half price deal on drinks for some reason, and always have some good deal on alcohol when you eat there outside of Friday and Saturday.
We go there because they have the best Salmon around, and then we mix up the sushi rolls, but have never been disappointed.
Kyoto Sushi gets a thumbs up from Lefty.

Just got back from another round of the $15 AYCE sushi and brought my 6-yr old son. Place was packed, but the service was great. Again, the food was fantastic.

I don’t know if it’s the same owner, but there’s a Kyoto Sushi coming soon to Savage at O’Connell & CR 42 in the spot formerly used by La Fogato, and before that, Pannekoeken.
