On Friday night after we flew in I wanted to get some stuff off our list done. We drove straight from LAX to Santa Monica and I had every intention (based on our estimated arrival time) of taking photos of the beach and exploring the Pier at night and possibly riding some rides.
Well, American Airlines had different plans for us and gave us an hour and a half delay while they “swapped engines”. Uhh, that was comfy to hear, really. After sitting in the terminal for a while and finally boarding, we were treated to a 20 min longer delay while they loaded bags onto the plane that they “forgot”. Uhh, nice.
Anyway, we arrived late and near dark and by the time we got to Santa Monica it wasn’t worth really doing anything. It was nice, however, to know that we saw both the Pacific and the Atlantic two weeks apart :)
We headed back to our hotel, which was a fuckhole and a half, and checked in. We go up to our room, #201 at the Days Inn in Whittier, CA and got settled. We were leaving to get a late dinner (even for PST!) and I noticed that our door didn’t lock — at all.
I waltz down to the desk and tell them the issue. “I fix now” is the reply when I state that the door doesn’t lock. “Uhh, no, you will give me another room — you ‘fixing’ it isn’t safe.” “Yes, very safe, I fix.” After another 5 minutes of this bantering back and forth he finally says, “no non-smoking room left. You get smoking?” “No, I reserved a non-smoking room with a working door lock, I expect to get that.” He at first argued but the second I pulled out the phone and said, “we’ll see what Days Inn Corporate has to say about all this,” he changed his tone and we were soon situating ourselves in room #216.
Room #216 was dirty but not nearly as bad as #201. The blanket didn’t have any visible blood stains, didn’t have a sticky vanity countertop and the fridge wasn’t visibly dirty. Good start… The bathroom, however, had a sticky floor, mildewed and cracked walls, and a missing handle on the shower. Awesome.
We paid a total of $577 for the entire trip (two tickets, rental car, and hotel) for two nights so I wasn’t going to complain too much…
Anyway, we went out to dinner at a nearby restaurant after finding a gas station that offered air (not even free, just air). Apparently Los Angeles’ suburbs have a problem offering air at gas stations. Several either didn’t have it or were out of service.
We got back to the hotel and crashed. I was so tired after all the travel and horseshit that I didn’t even remember to wear a swim cap to keep the bugs out of my beard ;)
