Last week we read about an open mic night be held at Luxury Sweets in Apple Valley and decided to head over to check it out. We arrived just before 7 to a completely packed house. There were plenty of staff members on hand to sell gelato and there were plenty of people there to eat and listen to some cover free live music.
Kim ordered a strange combination of blue raspberry and mascarpone while I picked up a mascarpone and creme brule. $7.00 later we had our over-sized scoops and found the last remaining open table in the place. The music started up soon after that with some fairly terrible artist repeating the same 10 words (give or take) throughout the entire song. I wasn’t interested. The next person up was quite a bit better but by then Kim was already ready to go and we were out the door in just under an hour. I was really looking forward to seeing some of the others perform but Kim had things to do *shrug*.
The gelato was tasty and I have recommended it before. It was nice to see so many people come out to see live music being played in the South Metro but I really think that this type of shindig needs to occur in a place where the acoustics are a little better and where children are not permitted — preferably somewhere that serves alcohol. The echoes of the music and the children’s shrill voices coupled with the idle chit-chat between guests made it almost unbearable to listen to in our little corner. I guess if we go again we’ll have to sit front and center to ensure that we can actually hear.
Anyway a fun time and a nice change of pace for Apple Valley.

This looks great. We have so few music venues south of the river it’s ridiculous. Just because we live in a vanilla suburb doesn’t mean we have to embrace it. Is this a weekly deal there?

Sank, as noted in the original post, they are looking to do it the first and third Monday of each month.
La Luz is looking to have live music at their venue, once it opens, and I saw who I assume to be the owner there, with a t-shirt on, moving through the crowd. I hope their acoustics are better but being that it’s the same building, I doubt it.

So glad to see that you were able to come, but sorry to see that you were not able to see. That “fairly terrible artist” was just running through the same verse over and over for about 2 minutes because he was actually trying to get the sound system set up, then the music started about 10-15 minutes after that. From all accounts ALL of the guest artist were simply incredible, and the turn out was amazing. It seemed that every time someone had to leave that more people showed up. It really was a great night, and it last until about 30-45 after their actual closing time. Nobody seemed to care that the last artist didn’t even start until after closing. So that was VERY cool as well. So all in all it really was a great NIGHT!!!

David,
Then the artist was joking when they talked about writing the song…something about California. You would think I would have known after hearing the same words over and over again.
The turnout was definitely incredible and I was happy to see it. Definitely a great night.

Oh and the first artist was a group with a woman signing lead. Not a guy testing the system.

Sorry, thought you were talking about the setup time. Because that was just the first verse of a Beatles tune over and over again. Sounded a lot like what you were explaining. The night just kept getting better and better. Sorry you couldn’t stay for the whole thing. It was a REALLY fun night. And the owners of Luxury Sweets couldn’t have been any better, along with all of the artist and the Mayor (that girl has got a lot of energy).
