Last week’s poll asked whether weather (ha!) affected your choice in days for attending the Minnesota State Fair. With so many people saying “Neither”, I was sort of surprised at first but then remembered how miserable the food was this year for me and how many people here are stating more and more that they don’t do the fair because it’s just not that great. I really wish someone would up the game of the entire fair and stop trying to outdo people on food on a stick and instead try to outdo them by offering more food forward Fair fare (double ha!).
This week’s poll comes after waking up from a dream where I had one of those mattresses where you select how firm or soft you want it to be. I have been using the same mattress for too long and either I’m getting old or the mattress is and it’s starting to wear on me a bit. Aside from the high cost of mattresses, what really irks me about the process is finding something I like is never all that easy.
There are too many choices. Extra firm (read: concrete), firm, soft, pillow top, air, water, blah, blah. I prefer a pretty soft mattress and while I can sleep anywhere and on anything, I just don’t understand why anyone would ever want to buy a firm mattress except for some sort of self-discovered myth that firm mattresses are better for your back (because in my case, I wake up stiff as heck when I sleep in a hotel stupid enough to have firm mattresses).
So what about you? What sort of mattress do you prefer and why? Are you able to sleep on a mattress type that is different from yours at home? How often do you replace your mattresses and where do you usually get them from? Whatever you have to say about this one go ahead and vote over there —-> on the sidebar and then comment on below as I’d love to hear your thoughts.
After you do both of those things feel free to check out our expired polls in the archive or read through the previous posts about polls here.

We have a soft pillow top mattress that we both love. I don’t mind spending some money on a mattress given how much use you get out of it.

My wife and I just bought a SleepNumber bed. We went to far too many places and laid down in far to many mattresses over the course of 3 months and came back to the SleepNumber. She’s pregnant and adjusts her’s quit often.
We went with a middle of the road one because we actually didn’t like the thick pillow tops. I found that pillow tops didn’t effect the firmness of the bed. Regardless of mattress type (coil, foam, or air) all it did is create this sense of enclosure (or confinement).

We have a memory foam and love it. The only thing I don’t like about it is that it’s hot to sleep on, so all the bedding has to be 100% cotton.

We have a SleepNumber because I like firm and my wife likes much softer. Though I can sleep pretty much anywhere without a problem my wife has issues when we travel and is always happy to get back to our own bed.

The closest I could find is in-between, because essentially I don’t have a preference. Softer than the ground is about the only requirement. I expect that soft would be my favorite since I loved the early water beds, ya know, the big bags of water with no dampening inside. Thinking back I think it was due to having the ability to control temperature easily. No a/c in the summer, drop the temp a bit, every so slightly below body temp and sleep like a baby. In the winter, budgeting the gas bill, bump the temp up a bit, sleep like a baby.
Since marriage, mattress shopping has involved me laying down on numerous beds and saying, this one would be fine as my wife narrowed them down. I’m pretty sure the mattress she likes isn’t too firm, and not too soft. But to be honest, not sure if she really knows either since she seems to have a back ache regardless.
I expect my lack of care on mattresses comes from a youth spent on dirt floors camping, sleeping on foam bunk bed mattresses, fold out matresses and generally sleeping all sorts of places. Of course it helps that I don’t have any back problems.

My back needs a fairly firm mattress. If I sleep on something soft, I just about have to be hauled out of bed on a backboard. I can get through a movie laying on my couch (which is fairly soft), but any longer and the back just starts hurting.
It’s been just over 5 years with my current mattress (Original Mattress Factory) which wasn’t the firmest they had, and I didn’t go for the highest end pillowtop. I think I went down one level on both. I sleep well. And I rotate the mattress 180° in the summer and flip it in the winter. This mattress replaced a Sealy Posturepedic that was well past it’s lifespan in less than 10 years and wasn’t really all that comfortable.

I dislike mattress shopping. Another instance where things don’t last as long as they used to. I think we have bought three beds in the last 20 years. Current one doesn’t flip, which we shouldn’t have chose (I rotate it). Second of three was “original mattress factory” which started off too firm, but ultimately I think was best of the three. Medium firmness, w pillow top

I sleep on a futon. I prefer anything other than the futon, except the 18 year old mattress that I ditched to move to a futon. I’d like to buy a real bed, but the thought of moving it to my third floor apartment has me thinking the futon is just fine.

Kassie, I used to sleep on a futon and I found that using a memory foam mattress topper increased sleeping comfort exponentially. You can find really good deals on mattress toppers on Overstock.com. It doesn’t even have to be a very expensive one. Also, I used to date a guy who bought a mattress and used the futon frame instead of a box spring. Might be an affordable and less heavy option for you.

We’ve owned a SleepNumber bed for 8 years now. The adjustable aspect of the bed is what sold me. There have been times where I’ve had back issues, and being able to firm up the mattress was a life saver.
With my wife being pregnant, her being able to adjust the bed as time goes on is helping her to sleep better at night.
After being away from our bed, I will say that it’s a remarkably noticeable how much better I sleep on my own mattress.
