Out at the Minnesota Music Cafe with Kim, her friend Kim and Kim’s husband to see a local cover band.
The show was starting at 9 so we arrived about two hours early to sit down, get some food, and maybe play a couple games of darts.
I had checked out the menu ahead of time and noticed it was mostly grill and fryer foods. A lot of eggrolls, onion rings, fries, wings, and combos of the above.
I decided I wanted Kim and I to split the Cafe Sampler, a combination of Bruschetta, hot spinach and artichoke dip, jerk chicken skewers, and fresh veggies. I also ordered their MMC Burger (no option for cooking was given) which is 1/2 pound burger with lettuce, tomato, American, Swiss, or provolone cheese. You can add mushrooms, onions, or bacon for an additional charge. I wasn’t asked what cheese I wanted and I’m only noticing the choice after the fact… Kim went with their BLT and fries.
The venue itself is much larger than I would have expected. While it’s no First Ave, it is quite a nice space for music. The bar is a large expanse, running in an odd shape and fitting 35 people or so. They had some decent beers on tap including Guinness and Stella Artois. Not bad but unfortunately the waitress didn’t rattle any of the good shit off while I was ordering so I ended up choosing from the 4 domestics she offered. Bleh.
Our platter came out and while it was fucking huge (a 16″), it was fucking wrong. Instead of the Cafe Platter we ended up with the MMC Platter which has eggrolls, onion rings, wings, chicken fingers, and mozzarella sticks. I was starving so I dove in not realizing the mistake until it was too late. After mentioning it to the waitress later, she said she did write down the Cafe so we wouldn’t be overcharged by having the MMC. Instead of taking responsibility and apologizing for the mistake she just looked at me blankly. Not cool.
Our food came out at the same time as the platter, bleh, and was kinda shitty. The portion of seasoned fries (which I didn’t eat) was nice and the large pickle spear (which Kim didn’t get) was good. The burger, because it was fucking way overdone, sucked. I could have been eating a Quarter Pounder at Rotton Ronnies for all I could tell. Kim’s BLT fell apart and didn’t get finished. Not so hot there either.
The service was *slow*. There were 4 tables full and 4 people at the bar when we arrived. It took much longer than expected for all parts of our service. I wasn’t pleased at all and I hope my meager tip reflected that.
After eating, Kim and I played a couple rounds of darts and then went over to the stage area and sat down at a table for four with a decent view of the stage. Because of the odd shape of the room, there are few tables that are of this size that are in the middle of the stage.
After sitting down we were quickly served by a different wait staff member. I ordered a Black and Tan and a water. Within seconds he returned with my water and perfectly poured Black and Tan. I guess it was just the previous waitress that sucked. This guy, so far, is working for tips.
He asked how dinner was and even though I felt like answering, “have you ever eaten a pile of rat shit?” I didn’t. Kim was proud of my restraint.
While the band was good (I enjoyed the Steppenwolf, Los Lobos, and SRV covers) I wouldn’t come back without eating elsewhere first.
