Tonight Kim and I headed out to the world famous Roy Wilkins Auditorium in downtown St Paul for the final Minnesota RollerGirls bout of 2008, 28 Games Later. Opening entertainment was provided by the announcers, WetSpot and his kick-ass homemade cannon, and plenty of freebies launched into the stands. Halftime entertainment was by the self-proclaimed “second best ELO cover band in the Twin Cities” E.L.nO (warning: MySpace page) and the big prize was the coveted “Golden Skate” to the winning team this year.
Quick overview:
1. Awesome bout that was quite physical at times.
2. Maddie passed a note to Sparkle Ninja that read, “Make the ugly girls cry.” For her hysterical commentary she was awarded a Swarm frisbee and the quote was read by the announcers to a hushed crowd.
3. The crowd was the biggest ever that I have seen and it was awesome to see the stands as packed as they were. The last time I saw a crowd like that for MNRG was the first bout of the season in early 2007.
4. The Rockits won the coveted “Golden Skate” in a victory over the Dagger Dolls.
As expected, I have a couple of videos and the first is of the pre-game entertainment with WetSpot and crew using his cannon to launch various items into the crowd which came from boxes labeled “Puppies” and “Kittens”. Hysterical:
Here is Buffy being a bitch and starting a fight, as usual :)
Here are the Rockits taking the win and then celebrating with a victory lap:

Thanks to the MN Rollergirls for a fantastic end to a great year. Being both a Dolls fan and a Rockits fan, I knew I would be leaving happy. I must have looked like an idiot wearing my Rockits gear and cheering outloud for the Dolls at times. Oh well! The Gardabelts also made an impressive showing, winning the bout and avoiding laundry detail. It looked like they were setting up to do the switch between pivot and jammer at the end. I know it can be done, but I have never seen it happen. Unfortunately, if that was the plan, the attempt was thwarted by a trip to the penalty box. In any event, I now must suffer 6th months of waiting for derby to start again.
The refs did a much better job this time of keeping things under control and running smoothly. Nice job!
It is my understanding that Wetspot designed the posters and tshirts for this bout. Kudos to him, as it was my favorite of the seven tshirts. Especially love the gold!
Maddie had a great time and was dressed in all pink in support of her favorite team, the Dagger Dolls. She was thrilled with the attention that her note to Sparkle Ninja received.

Thanks for the nice recap of the championship … it was a great night and even though my Dolls didn’t win, we had a great time playing and it was a good end to a great season. The crowd was phenomenal, both in size and involvement. I can’t tell you how exciting it is to play in front of so many people and hear the crowd roar.
The notes from Maddie were ADORABLE! We got one during half-time when we were backstage warming up and it was just so darn cute. It was so much fun to see so many kids out for this bout; seemed like even more than usual.
See you next season!

Bill, just one question: Why is Dwight Schrutte lurking behind the trophy in your first photo?

This was my first Minnesota RollerGirls event and I loved it! I wish I had been attending all year. I’m bummed the season is over and I now have to wait until Fall.
I was impressed by the size of the crowd!

Scott,
We put in our order for another round of season tickets for next year even though, at one point, I was wondering if I would renew.
It is a long wait and it does suck but I’m sure it will be worth it! :)
