Tonight I headed out with Kevin’s family, Dave, and Kim to check out the final Minnesota RollerGirls bout of the year.
We agreed earlier in the week to meet at Great Waters at 5 and I made the unnecessary reservations early this morning. We arrived at about 10 to 5 and found the place entirely empty. I suppose that during the colder times of the year there are fewer people willing to sit outside than there were today and that might have made up for the lack of people inside but whatever. We immediately took our seat and ordered up some good beer and food.
I ordered their wings (I wanted their St. Paul Burger but that’s only offered for dinner). Kim got the four-cheese pizza, Kevin got some nearly unintelligibly named dish with Penne pasta and I didn’t pay attention to what anyone else got.
Anyway, my wings were actually quite good. I am usually weary getting them at places but I enjoyed my meal tonight immensely. Kim usually loves the four cheese pizza but tonight, because it was seriously lacking in bleu cheese, it wasn’t nearly as good as it normally is. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their food and drink. Woot.
After dinner we headed through Rice Park where the RollerGirls were having their end of the year picnic. They were offering your typical picnic fair and beer for fairly decent prices. We passed right on through and got into the line early so that we could get our free shit (tonight’s big give away was a NICE Minnesota RollerGirls water bottle). Kim picked up the last set of RollerGirls trading cards that she needed (Dagger Dolls) and was set.
Our General Admission tickets said “Balcony” instead of floor this time so we were shooed away at the door and retreated to some nice non-reserved seating up in the balcony. This area actually worked out well for my videoing the event so I wasn’t too upset with it. I do like the speedy action trackside but beggars can’t be choosers ;)
The opening act today was the St Paul Bouncing Team. They are a St Paul Winter Carnival tradition going back to the late 1800s. I thought they were fairly boring outside of scantily clad girls bouncing up and down on improvised/portable trampoline but it was slightly entertaining overall. Check out the video below:
The first match up of the night was between the Dagger Dolls and the Garda Belts. Usually they only do one quarter in each half but tonight, because it was the finals, they had to perform back to back quarters with little rest between. I figured that there would be some great fighting, and there was including a SUPER hard hit taken by Dagger Dolls captain Candi Pain which left her motionless on the floor for a few seconds.

The Garda Belts went on to win the match up between the two teams tonight and here’s the final jam along with some post jam footage:
I’ll be posting some more about tonight’s bout which will include video from the Alpenrose polka band (who fucking rule BTW) as well as video from the Atomic Bombshells vs the Rockits matchup tomorrow — I need more upstream.
If you’re looking to get season tickets for next year you best get in touch with the Roy Wilkins box-office on Monday. Because of high demand, the RollerGirls are asking for $25 deposits (goes towards your season tickets or to other RG bouts if you don’t want to go through w/the season tickets) per seat and included fliers in the programs for tonight. Kim, Kevin, and I will be putting in our request for seats on Monday morning. Be forewarned :)
