On Saturday Aaron invited Kimmy and I to the Minnesota RollerGirls bout at the Roy Wilkins Auditorium. I have seen plenty of roller derby in the past but “flat track roller derby” was a new experience for me.
Apparently none of it is staged (if it was, it wasn’t apparent to my untrained eye) and all the teams are participant run. This past weekend’s match was against the Ohio Rollergirls and wasn’t even close to being fair.
Minnesota stomped all over those poor bitches and made them look stupid as hell ;) Aaron said that the matches are usually quite a bit more exciting with a lot more penalties.
The half-time show was put on by the Alpenrose polka band and before you go on to think, “wtf?!”, I have to say that it was probably one of the most entertaining shows I have seen in a long time. People were dancing all over the track and went wild when they started playing rock and roll tunes while the lead guy played one of those Ricola-like horns ;)
Overall, a great time, and Kim and I are looking to get tickets for the next match!
