Last weekend we headed out to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum with Joey and his family for a nice afternoon which included lots of food under the willow trees and some wandering and looking at flowers. During our picnic, Joey’s wife noted that she wanted to play State Fair Bingo this year. Well, The Wife thought this was a hilarious idea and did some searching and found this site which offered homemade Minnesota State Fair Bingo cards for download which were originally created by Heidi Ocel (thanks to those on Facebook for the info!). What better way to do everyone’s second favorite thing at the State Fair: people watch with a purpose?!
After looking through the Great Minnesota Get Together Bingo Cards available, we decided that a handful of the options were not appropriate and The Wife set out on a mission to recreate these cards with her own options based on personal observation and research done, via Flickr, of the people and things seen at the MN State Fair. In addition to those more suited for adults, she has also created a series of cards just for children which include mostly animals and State Fair booths. The Wife went on to add more than 100 new options. Wow!
I plan to use the Minnesota State Fair Bingo cards to eliminate some of the boredom I have while walking around the buildings and animal barns and hope to document as many as possible with a photograph. I have a feeling that would make for an awesome online image gallery :-) So far, after looking through all of the options my two favorites are “Double Fisting Corndogs” and “Jason DeRusha”.
After much hard work we present to you the 2011 Minnesota State Fair Bingo cards for your own amusement. Feel free to click the thumbnails to see a larger version or download the PDFs below to print and use over the next two weeks:

In addition to what The Wife has come up with here what other options would you like to see added to the cards? Do you think you’ll be participating in this year’s State Fair Bingo or will you just do your “fly by the seat of your pants,” people watching? Would you be willing to submit your own photographic evidence of what you saw? Whatever you have to say about the Minnesota State Fair Bingo cards The Wife created go ahead and comment on!

Not to give anyone an advantage, but I’ll be at the WCCO booth this Sunday from 10-12pm, Tuesday the 31st from 2-3pm, Friday the 3rd from 12:30pm – 1:30 pm, and Saturday the 4th from 1-3 pm.
Bingo!
I like “Clogging” because it’s so random.
August 25th, 2010 at 8:18 am
This is awesome – I’m totally using these when we all go next week!
August 25th, 2010 at 8:22 am
Sounds like fun and certainly something to give a shot. I just found out that my plan for a day at the fair wooing my wife has turned into a half day at the fair with a 1:00 deadline so she can be home in time to go hang with her posse playing bingo at Mystic Lake. Maybe I can convince her that bingo at the Fair will be more fun?
August 25th, 2010 at 8:26 am
I was going to suggest “Mullet,” but I see Kim already has me covered. I think I will up the ante and look for twin mullets on husband/wife or significant-other pairs. Great idea, Kim. This will be fun.

Are we going to play this on company picnic day?! Will you provide the cards? = )
August 25th, 2010 at 11:04 am
I love it, even though I probably won’t be going.
August 25th, 2010 at 11:28 am
If I wear cutoff jean shorts, bring an electric cart, and hang out with Jason DeRusha all day, I’m really just one butterhead sculpture away.
The fair is going to be epic this year.
August 25th, 2010 at 11:42 am
Excellent!
I just did a quick skim but I didn’t see “Tattoo with spelling error” — always a personal favorite.

HAHA I have been reading your column for several years and never commented until now, but the “back boobs” just made me spit my soup out I was laughing so hard.

Those planning to take pictures, be aware of the rules on the fair property:
http://www.mnstatefair.org/_assets/pdf/media/VideoPhotogGuidelines.pdf
In particular, no pictures of those on the free entertainment stages or grand stand stage. (maybe take a picture of your kid, significant other with the stage in the background?)
All the rest probably don’t apply.

Holy. Moley. This is a gift. The kind of gift that the matching-silky-jacket, prank-playing-4Hers, French-Fry-kids-on-a-smoke-break, mocking-yellow-slide-workers, stroller-mafia types would never get. Danke.
August 25th, 2010 at 7:36 pm
Uh I think you could have pretty much put “Mullet” as the “FREE” space.

By “rooster” do you mean a boy chicken? Or the boy you call “Rooster?” Or heck, even the one on your arm?
P.S. Dad hit up the fair this morning and managed to see an overly large person take a header off her scooter. I think he wins.

So we had fun at the fair. We were there for about 4 hours, then had to head home. Playing bingo definitely was fun…. and slightly disturbing (i.e. the front butt).
Here is a link to my bingo pictures and a few others.

Some suggestions if you are attending. the 94 & snelling lot was full when we left at 1pm and was pretty full by 9am when we got there. If you go there and it’s fully, you could try hanging for 15 or 20 minutes to see if it opens up from people coming back and leaving.
Also, if you can, get your tickets ahead of time. Getting tickets when you get to the fair, if you go at a popular time, will mean a good 20 minutes in line to get tickets.

P.s.. .my wife found an easy way to check off the plumbers crack box. there was a piece of trash she saw over on the ground and she told me I should go over and pick that up. So I walk over and “bend over” to grab what turned out to be a fair map. Next thing I hear is “Check… plumbers crack” and she giggled.

2) Any sighting of DeRusha or Crisco at the fair counts as a find, scheduled appearance or not.
3) You cannot count yourself or anyone in your own party for a bingo space
4) Last one to bingo buys Sweet Martha’s for everyone else.
Bingo on!

Bill – any updates to the cards for 2012?
August 19th, 2012 at 8:41 pm
Jason,
The Wife says not for 2012. She’s too busy with The Baby and The Rooster. Maybe 2013!
August 19th, 2012 at 8:43 pm
Yeah… those 2012 card will still do pretty good.
August 19th, 2012 at 9:13 pm
Lets be honest, the fair hasn’t really changed that much. And as I have been since 2003, I will still be ubiquitous.
August 20th, 2012 at 8:36 am
From what I hear, you should change “Jason DeRusha Sighting” to “Fat Jason DeRusha Sighting”. He has been eating like a decadent pig of late.
August 20th, 2012 at 9:04 am
Wow lefty. I think you’re tipping the scale a little heavily towards the d-bag side with that comment.
August 20th, 2012 at 9:07 am
At least he called you ‘decadent’, right?
August 20th, 2012 at 9:13 am
A little testy there DeRusha? Sounds like you may need to hit the gym after all. I was just poking fun at the twitter fest you did last month from Butcher and the Boar, Manny’s and all those other big meal places you were out to eat at.
Well, I have never been called a douche-bag by famous celebrity before, so I guess I can mark this day down as one for the books.
August 20th, 2012 at 9:16 am
You still haven’t. This is Lazy Lightning. No one of any local importance reads this site except MSPD.
August 20th, 2012 at 9:17 am
Good Question!
August 20th, 2012 at 12:49 pm
Now there’s one to print out, frame, and hang next to my worthless U of M diploma.
August 20th, 2012 at 2:48 pm
Just like lefty was technically joking, I technically didn’t call him a D-bag. I said he was “tipping the scale” towards D-bag.
Sorry if I overreacted… “Fat Jason DeRusha” seemed unnecessarily harsh, I didn’t get it as a joke.
August 20th, 2012 at 3:13 pm
Besides, it was a typo. I think he meant “phat” like Cindy Crawford.
August 20th, 2012 at 3:33 pm
Just to be clear. Last month DeRusha was posting all over the internets the really great places he was eating at (except Manny’s which sucks). I think he claimed he had a bunch of gift cards, but we all know he is super rich.
Anyway, I used the word fat because well, this is the internet and why wouldn’t I? It’s not like I work with him or something.
Anyway, apparently everyone thought it was funny but him so that’s my bad.
I am going to change it to “Pleasantly Plump Jason DeRusha”, and leave it at that.
Hope you all get to see him at the fair!
August 20th, 2012 at 11:43 pm
lefty and I kissed and made up in a wonderfully awkward twitter exchange today that involved some randoms, which was delightful. I also didn’t quickly make the connection with lefty’s handle here and his twitter handle – because clearly I would have just straight-up called him a D-bag.
It’s all good. I recommend (for comedy purposes) using the following terms instead of “fat”: Husky, chunky, pudgy, large-and-in-charge.
August 21st, 2012 at 12:47 pm
Well, I plan to drag my fat ass on down to the fair along with my ball and chain on Thursday the 30th. I’ll be the fat guy wearing a hat, with no sunglasses, and carrying around some outdated (2011) state fair bingo cards watching Sourdough Slim for free. I might even be munching on some donuts or french fries.
http://youtu.be/pK563raAbms
I’m pretty sure my shirt will be un-tucked and if it isn’t raining, I’ll be sweating.
Oh, and if you see me take a picture of you, that means i just filled in a square on my bingo card!

Last year KDWB linked to our cards. This year they took them, put their shitty logos all over it and called it their own: http://daveryanshow.iheart.com/cc-common/mainheadlines3.html?feed=336979&article=10367818 and then deleted The Wife’s comment when she posted that they took ours.
August 24th, 2012 at 4:09 pm
You should watermark them with the Lazy Lightning logo and copywrite.
August 24th, 2012 at 4:12 pm
I could but I’m not going to pay the fee for copyrighting them. If I don’t pay the fee then all I could sue for would be the damages I incurred and since it wouldn’t be a full copyright I wouldn’t be due legal fees.
I have a feeling their corporate lawyers would bury me in a lengthy court battle for nothing.
Shaming them on here and social media is much more useful. And if you don’t remember, KS95 stole Lazy Lightning content outright once before (copy and pasted my post text for state fair stuff word for word, including the fucking HTML tags) and didn’t really even apologize for it.
Radio stations suck.
