Last week’s poll asked about your favorite pizza topping and boy did it get a response. While everyone knows, and can’t understand, my dislike of meat on pizzas, everyone else obviously loves it. While that fact didn’t shock me by any means, the fact that pepperoni wasn’t the winner did. Sausage? Really? In Minnesota? Most everything I’ve eaten here with sausage is awful. Sausage isn’t supposed to be mild and tasteless people. It’s supposed to be hot and spicy like intended. So I’m going to go out on a limb and suggest that it’s popularity, for most at least, is because the Minnesota taste buds find pepperoni too spicy and the lame sausage you can easily find here is more mild and thus what is preferred. Thoughts?
This week’s poll comes after hosting The Rooster’s 1st birthday party for friends. We had a decent turnout although not as many people showed as RSVPd. I made/purchased a variety of appetizers and we had the traditional cake. Some things were eaten up like you couldn’t believe while others were left to move to a friend’s house for the Superbowl today between the Pittsburgh Steelers and some other team which I can’t remember.
The question is when you go to a party what types of foods/snacks/etc to you prefer? Do you like stuff you can simply pop in your mouth or do you want to get a plate full of stuff and wander around with it as if it were a cocktail party? When you have a party what are your favorite items to make and what seems most popular?(recipes please!) Whatever you have to say about this one go ahead and vote on the sidebar and then comment on below with your favorite things to serve and/or eat at parties.
After you do both of those things feel free to check out our expired polls in the archive or read through the previous posts about polls here.

We just got done with the 14th annual version of a holiday party we have with our “old group.” It started out as a pretty formal affair, and morphed to a semi-coordinated potluck.
A few years ago I changed it to “finger food only” to rave reviews. The issue is that people like to drink, talk, and drink. So, foods that traditionally count as appetizers seemed to work best with the ad-hoc socializing, and also caters well to the hours-long grazing instead of a set meal time of years past. The last few years, I set up a taco bar as the central part of the buffet.
So, my experience (FWIW) tends to suggest that you run any foods through the “can this be out and nibbled upon across a several hour time span?” Appetizers, taco bar, a croc of chili, etc. seem to cater to that behavior.

Can I vote for all of the above?

Um … Potato sausage pizza? Hmm…
My husband loves to make a pot of chili or barbecue beans when the kids come to visit.
For the Super Bowl today, he’s grilling trout and shrimp.
Yes, we’re rebels. : )

I’m a little insulted by your “everyone” comments, since I’ve repeatedly agreed with you on your no-meat stance. Hoser.
It depends on the party. We have a big huge Rockband party once or twice a year, and we’ve done pulled pork, chili, and a taco bar. Things that can hang out in a crockpot all day. Today we’re having chili (but not a party). We also have an outdoor games party every summer, and we grill (sometimes complete with raging grease fires) and others bring a side dish of some sort.
I’m perfectly happy with a range of appetizers as well. It depends on the atmosphere.

Are you asking what my favorite to serve is, or my favorite to eat?
Of the normal “Minnesotan” type stuff, I like cocktail wieners and meatballs in crockpots. Usually made with grape jelly. I like pickles wrapped in cream cheese and chipped beef. I like pinwheels with cream cheese and whatever else goes in them.
And I would never make any of those things, ever, at a party at my house.
My go-to recipe for party food is to halve and roast fingerling potatoes. Top with a dollop of sour cream and a dollop of caviar. Always tasty and can be served room temp. I make some without the caviar for the boring and vegetarian.
Homemade gravlax is awesome and easy, but sometimes just doesn’t get eaten up. I’ve learned not to make too much.
I tend to do a homemade hummus because it is cheap and a people pleaser. Serve with a variety of veggies and pita chips.
I’ve done flatbread with toppings in the oven, basically pizza without sauce. I like them because they are easy to make and can be made vegetarian. I have way too many vegetarian friends.
I love doing pulled pork and making small sandwiches with it. Very easy and tasty.
I host a game day almost every Sunday and I make a vegetarian soup for it each week. I like that because I can just keep it on low on my stove and people can eat as they want. This has only been going on for a few weeks, so I’ve been able to do a different soup each week. It is sort of fun and good since everyone is sitting.

After attending a super bowl party yesterday I can better quantify my choice. I prefer finger food, but let me qualify what I call finger food. For me, finger food is anything I can eat with my fingers, and that at worst, I can remove any residue just by licking my finger clean. Thus the stuff can get put onto a plate, but I shouldn’t need to go up to a fork or spoon to eat it.

I am a “dipper” so I like the plate full of food method :)
My favorite dips??
Tortilla Chips, guacamole, layered taco dip, salsa, chili-cheese or pico de gallo.
Buffalo Chicken Dip (with bread or celery)
Reuben Dip (with small rye breads)
Bruschetta or salsa di parmigiana on french bread slices

[...] week’s poll asked what type of party food you prefer and the run-away winner was ‘finger-foods’. While not necessarily a surprise to me [...]
