As I mentioned the other day, John Sandford’s Prey series owns me. I just finished Certain Prey and will be moving to Mortal Prey later tonight. Great quick reads that had me clawing to get through the book and at some points I had to restrain myself from reaching into my bag at work to sneak a quick peek during the day.
Definitely different from some of the other books I have read more recently, especially Chaim Potok’s The Chosen. A great book and one recommended by my previous co-worker Andy. You can read his post about the book here.
What have you been reading recently? Anything decent that you would recommend to others?

Bill and others,
If you liked Chaim Potok’s “The Chosen”, then you will have to get into “The Promise.” It is the sequel. It is just as interesting and entangling. I’m with you though on needing a little “brain candy” from time to time. It just takes me SOOO long to read a book that I don’t usually do it. Glad to hear that you’re reading again though.

Andy,
Yeah, the stresses of switching jobs and stuff definitely put a damper on the book reading but I’ll catch back up to where I need to be. We have vacation coming up in about two months so I’ll blow through a bunch then too :)

I read the Publisher’s Clearing House emails so I can get the good deals. I read the coupon flyers that come in the mail. I’m having an off day, neither of those jokes are funny.
I have read many of the “Prey” books - really enjoy them, especially being able to mentally picture exactly where something is taking place in the book. I have to make sure my husband isn’t going to be out late or traveling for work when I read those type of books otherwise the click of the heat coming on or the rush of leaves against the patio door are transformed to the sounds of the latest serial killer invading my home.
I read a lot of girly “brain candy” as you say. I love to read and almost always have a stack of books ready to go.
I’m in a Jodi Picoult phase right now. I just finished “The Tenth Circle” and found it interesting with the right amount of twists to keep you reading. “Nineteen Minutes” was an amazing novel (in my humble opinion). I have a couple of her books lined up for our summer vacation to upstate NY…when my sister-in-law reminds me every 10 minutes how lucky I am that I don’t have kids and can read a book in peace. Oh, the irony!

…neither of those jokes are funny.
Are we supposed to be surprised? heh! ;-)
Back on topic:
So, would you recommend Picoult to a guy? I looked through her website and what’s written about her on Wikipedia but what do you think. Worthwhile for some random guy to read on the bus (especially if he’s into legal thrillers which seems to be similar to what she writes about)?

Actually, I would recommend Jodi Picoult to a man. I didn’t find anything overtly “female” about the books - no sappy love scenes etc. (at least the ones I’ve read so far). “Nineteen Minutes” is about a school shooting (if you didn’t get to that one on amazon) and has some interesting “legal stuff.”
I started reading “My Sister’s Keeper” early this winter and what I read I thought was good. Like many of her stories it seems loosely based on a real life event (couple has a child to provide bone marrow for older dying child). I’ve heard they are making a movie out of the book so if you’re lazy you can wait. ;)
P.S. I see a comment on the sidebar about McHugh’s Bar and Grille in Savage…never heard of it but that is my maiden name! Weird! Again with the stalking!
P.S.2…I know you’ve come to depend on my witty comments, don’t deny it.
P.S.3 What are they going to put on the “Watson’s” land? shocked to see it was already torn down.
P.S.4 Is this even a legal use of the P.S. system?

Mrs. M,
Thanks for the notes on Picoult, I’ll see what I can find. If I don’t like it, I know your house is somewhere on this map!
re: stalking via McHugh’s
Technically I have never been to McHugh’s so I’m not stalking you there. We went there a few times when it was known as Spectator’s (which still has a location open on the North side of the city).

re: Watson’s
If you had taken the time to read the link I provided in the post, you would have known that Watson’s was forced to close to make way for its eventual demise and future status as an overgrown parking lot for the MVTA transit station next door. From what I saw today, that’s going to be one gigantic fucking parking lot. While there are a lot of riders and ridership is expected to increase, I’m not quite sure they need *that* much parking… I guess when you can imminent domain something, you might as well do it right!
re: PS
No! ;-)

Would you kindly provide an internet lingo dictionary so I can look up “SSIA.”
Sorry, I noticed your “future transit station” comment under the picture AFTER I posted the comment. Please don’t dump me into the “stupid emails” category!
We went to Boston Market tonight for dinner. The temp in there was freezing and Mark (MrMarcos) hated the “Tuscany” seasoning on the chicken. Oh, and they forgot to leave my Boston Carver chicken sandwich “sauceless.” In case you want to add that to your reviews. I crack myself up.

re: “stupid e-mails” category
Be thankful you posted a comment instead of sending an e-mail ;)
re: Boston Market
I haven’t eaten there since my fat days while working in Eden Prairie. I can’t say I miss it all that much ;)

Bill,
Just read Sandford’s second to latest, ‘The Innocent Man’ - Long read, it’s a bit confusing, and strays from the Kidd and Prey novels, however is based off of a true story. While it is still a good book, it’s not as engaging as the local stories are. I’d put this one on the bottom of the ‘to read’ list by Sandford, along with Skipping Christmas, and Painted House.
