Last week’s poll asked how you take your coffee. While the majority of those responding said “black” that’s because they’re insane. With “cream” so far behind, it’s clear that many people who claim I have no tastebuds from eating chilies need to take a look in the mirror at their own burning of taste buds first!
This week’s poll is courtesy of The Wife. Just after a flock of geese flew overhead (language warning), I asked her if she had any ideas for Sunday’s poll question. She then smiled in her quiet way and suggested that I ask about reminders that the fall season is rapidly approaching.
So what is it that makes you reminded that fall is soon to be here with that most horrible season following soon after? Is it football or the geese? Maybe it’s the crisp evenings or the State Fair? Maybe it’s the fact that it’s getting dark so early that you feel like it’s bed time by 7:45. Do you dread fall or are you one of those crazies who think it’s so much better to be freezing cold than nice and toasty warm?
Whatever you have to say about the rapid onset of fall go ahead and vote on the sidebar and then comment on below. After you do both of those things feel free to check out our expired polls in the archive or read through the previous posts about polls here.

I voted “Crisp Night Air”, because September nights in Minnesota always remind me of Halloween in Indiana. Yes, there are parts of the world where children wear their trick-or-treat costumes WITHOUT thermals.

I voted “other.” For me it’s the changing of color of the leaves. Our neighborhood has a tree that is always first to start changing color, every year, without fail. That one tree plus the changing sumac are the first indicators for me. A close second is football. When I was in college (many, many years ago) I could walk down the street on game-day with a female on one arm and a blanket on the other and no one questioned it. ;-)

These all are good, but for me, I voted “other” because the main thing that reminds me that fall is coming are grasshoppers in August. It’s a subtle, but very real reminder that fall is approaching even when it’s still warm outside and summery things are going on.

I voted “other” because as a teacher, it’s pretty much school starting.

Tim, I was attacked by grasshoppers yesterday while riding my bike out to the Minnesota Zoo, I just assumed it was a suburban thing, not a becoming fall thing. Good to know.
I love the fall so, so much. I love being able to sleep under heavy blankets with the windows open and doing anything active outside is so much more enjoyable.
But I too hate the winter. I hate snow and I hate cold. I try not to complain too much about the heat since I know I’ll complain about the snow and cold. But today is about perfect in terms of weather for me.

Congrats to Tim on comment #900!

At this present moment, I think the state fair is the great milestone, mainly because it goes on for a week and a half, it’s hard to miss.
If you ask me again in 4 years, school starting will be the reminder.

Football for probably the past 32 years has been the sign for me as I was always playing it. Before that it was the crop harvesting and leaves falling. All the various town festivals and such. I was driving out Hwy 12 yesterday and ran through Dassle, MN where they were having their Rooster days. My father said they cook up 1000 whole chickens over the weekend. A couple weeks before that I was out in Ortonville for Corn Days and yes, lots of corn all over the place.

Autumn is the best season by a mile. Hands down. No contest.

Tuition Bill! Ah, fall.

Fall might just be my favorite thing about Minnesota. The air is crisp (my choice in the poll), the leaves are beautiful, and I have a reason to curl up under the covers.
As long as I can push thoughts of the impending doom of winter out of my head, I’ll be a happy camper over the next three months.

I chose other. For me the milestone is that that the Apple stand out by me has opened. This was their first weekend and we made a stop today and picked up some Zestars. Yum.

Back to school time for kids starting in 1990. Last one is a senior in high school this year.

Cooler air and shorter daylight hours mark Fall for me. The “most horrible” season that follows Fall is not Winter, but Spring–at least from, say, St. Patrick’s Day through May 1, when we have wind, rain, cold-humidity days, overcast skies, icy piles of leftover snow, and mushy ground. That said, Fall is a fantastic time of year, at least when the daytime highs range from, oh, 55 to 70.

As I was driving home from school today, I noticed another sign of fall. Culver’s pumpkin shakes are back.

The Wife will be pleased. Thanks for the heads up DM.

I love fall and always have, maybe it is because I was born in the fall. While I hate the ever decreasing amount of daylight I love the crisp air, the changing of the leaves, football games and a nice fire. It is unfortunate in Minnesota that Winter sometimes starts early and we don’t get to see much of the fall. Yesterday, the weather was perfect. Cool in the morning and warm but not hot in the afternoon. I wish every day could be as nice weather wise as yesterday.

I totally thought of her when I drove by. All the cool kids love pumpkin.

We know it’s fall because the water in the river suddenly is warmer than the air and in the morning the fog fills the valley like a Sherlock Holmes movie.

Blada-
I was just noticing that this morning. Made me wish I had my camera, and driving instead of riding the bus…
