Here are a couple of stories from around the South Metro which you might find interesting:
1. Chateau Lamothe nabbed two top three ratings for wine in the MSP metro beating out many other establishments, especially those downtown.
2. Crazy post over at the Savage Pacer about ghosts in Jordan.
3. Businesses in Rosemount are going to come together and try and tell Rosemount’s City Council what to do. Being that Rosemount’s City Council is on a mission to become just like every other South Metro suburb, I doubt they will do anything more than let it go in one ear and out the other while passively nodding.
4. There’s an editorial over at the Rosemount Town Pages about how the planned arts center will bring a lot to downtown Rosemount. As you probably know, I didn’t find too much worth in the old church that they bought to convert.
5. Burnsville really wants the CR-5/MN-13 intersection to get a face lift. Unfortunately the state has other ideas.
6. Farmington is looking for the YMCA to take over operation of the municipal pool.
7. Piston Pete’s is in the middle of a battle over the rights to a 30 foot stretch of land which Dakota County is going to take whether they pay him or not all for that stupid fucking BRT. The county is suing Apple Valley over it because they fucked up way back in 1973.
8. Katie Mintz of the Minnesota Sun Current has a local video webcast of South Metro news. You can check out all of the Minnesota Sun Current’s YouTube material here (they have a bunch of other suburbs too) or watch this week’s installment below. Nice work Katie!
9. I have word from the owner of The Savage Depot Bistro plans to open “in the next week”. I have been invited to test the waters ahead of time and will be visiting after it officially opens to do a review.
My question for this week is what do you think of all the bullshit surrounding Piston Pete’s 30 foot strip of land? Do you believe that Pete’s business will tank if the county takes it over and removes his direct access to Cedar? Do you think that the county should bother suing Apple Valley for the actions which occurred in 1973? Do you think that the county should do more to protect Piston Pete’s (given the current economic situation) if his business does indeed go under following their decision?

That Sun Newspapers video needs some polishing but it covered more relevant news in less time than the Strib’s NewsBreak. The reporter needs to work on her on camera skills but not bad for a suburban weekly.

I wonder why the sudden interest in this. Did all the local newspapers attend some conference that suggested they distribute media in video fashion to try and compete in the Internet age? Perhaps Katie herself could shed some light on that decision.

Love to see Chateau Lamothe get such a great article. We recently tried the place for the first time, and I am really sad I have not been there sooner. Great food, and incredibly nice people.

Hi Bill. Thanks for the mention.
There was no official media conference on video broadcasting. But you’re right, traditional news outlets are doing what they can to stay competitive and relevant in the Internet age. Videos are another way for us to deliver the news, and hopefully, reach new audiences. We’ve added other features to our website as well, like a user-generated events calendar, and there’s more to come.
It’s just so happens my “Apple Valley-Rosemount Today” broadcast went online the same week as the Strib’s new feature. Sun Newspapers has actually been producing videos for some time. I think we started last summer with video stories and narrated photo slide shows. In January, we began phasing in daily news broadcasts for our 40 communities. In Dakota County, Lakeville (www.mnsun.com/lv) and Burnsville (www.mnsun.com/bv) were up first. Eventually, Eagan will be added too.
From now on I’ll be posting a video broadcast every weekday afternoon. I’m learning as a I go, so as I get more comfortable I hope to add more visual elements (and improve my camera skills). I’m also interested in hearing what people would like to see on these broadcasts. Maybe a viewer “photo of the week” segment on Fridays? Or some sort of police call round-up? Suggestions are definitely welcome and can be e-mailed to kmintz@acnpapers.com.
