Another list of links to stories from around the South Metro that I found interesting this week but was too lazy to do any more digging on for a full post:
1. Thisweek reports that the Lakeville School District may acquire the old Lakeville police station (John, you were right–I stand corrected).
When the officer asked Brueske if he had been drinking, he replied, “Yes, way too much.” Brueske refused to take a field-sobriety test and further stated to the officer, “Just take me to jail and let’s get this over with. You and I both know that I’m drunk.”
I guess when you’re on your 4th DWI, you’re bound to know when you’re too drunk.
3. The MNSun reports (more from Thisweek too) that MnDOT is looking into ways to ease traffic congestion on Cedar (this was mentioned in last week’s roundup). The interesting this is that Mayor Mary claims Cedar traffic is the one thing that residents complain most about to her.
What about raising taxes and giving yourselves pay raises? What about the barren wasteland in the middle of Apple Valley? What about that stupid motherfucking roundabout that you made look pretty but still is pointless and has ruined the businesses that operate there? What about those stupid fucking painted bricks, which are now being converted into real bricks? What about us having to pay even more for Cedar BRT because the County thinks that it needs to look nice? What about Liquor Store #3 losing money faster than ever could have been imagined? How about Sharon LaComb’s conflicts of interest? How about you changing the name of the Senior Center to something stupid? But Cedar traffic is the number one issue–something you can do anything about?
Whatever dumbass.
4. The Star Tribune reports on the cafe in Burnsville HS that we’ve discussed before (#10).
They’re using it to learn about marketing, etc and are thinking of a name for it. If they go with ‘Nook’ they better serve a mean Jucy Lucy.
5. A great picture of some fungus growing on moss out of Lebanon Hill’s Schultz Beach in Eagan.
6. Jeff Achen from Thisweek interviews Al Franken on The Show. While I am not an Al Franken fan nor do I agree with him, I do think he brings a bit of humor to Washington–like in this clip about health care reform.
On a related note, Jeff Achen complained on Twitter back at the beginning of November that Congressman John Kline refused a request to appear on The Show. WTF, do the fucking show you asshole and be done with it. You aren’t that important and maybe, just maybe, you’ll end up being portrayed in a decent light because Jeff throws a lot of softballs. I’m so sick and fucking tired of politicians that believe they are above everyone else. Douchebag.
7. The Pioneer Press dumped a bunch of stories this morning including pay raises for teachers/nurses in District 196, the news that Burnsville is going to employ an expensive carbon filtration system for the water that tastes like ass, and more on Farmington wanting to find money to pay for the ice arena that I argue shouldn’t have been taxpayer funded in the first place.
That’s it for this week’s Roundup. I’m mainly interested in your thoughts on Apple Valley’s dumbass mayor claiming that Cedar traffic is the #1 issue in the city. Do you think that it is? But whatever you think about any of what’s listed above (maybe you just want to make fun of that idiot John Kline for refusing an interview?!) go ahead and comment on as I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Sorry about the database issue this morning. I have a really sweet post coming up for Monday and because of some automated things that it does (and an error in my original code) 90% of the database was fucked up. Most of the posts were overwritten with bullshit and needed to be restored. Because this issue started yesterday morning, I had to recover everything since then. The comments from after that would not import so I had to do them all manually. If you believe you are missing one, please let me know as I have them archived in e-mail and can post them manually for you.

The story doesn’t really get the pumping issue straight. The surface water is actually ground water that bubbled up from the ground to the surface. So yes, it is surface water, but it’s not saving ground water. It’s just moving ground water that bubbled up. Again, the entire point of the plant is so that Kraemer doesn’t get in trouble for putting excess water into the river and they get to keep digging. This is a no-win project for Burnsville, as this is not adding any net water to the aquifer. It’s just saving water that would otherwise be lost if Kraemer is allowed to continue.
The taste thing is getting ridiculous. There is no reason why they should be needing to add charcoal to the surface water, since it is just fracking ground water that’s sitting around. If a flavor is being added to the water, it is due to some piece of equipment along the line from where it bubbles up, to where it leaves the plant. They should fix that.
John Kline. Come on, quit being a dick. You need to make yourself available to the people.
The Mayor of Apple Valley is too disconnected from the reality of what is going on with her city if she truly believes traffic is the biggest problem.

I would be one of those people whose top complaints about Apple Valley is Cedar Avenue. It is one of the largest downsides to liveability in this community, and for people who drive through AV from Lakeville, Farmington, and Rosemount. I almost chose to not live in AV because of the stoplight-heaven that this city is.
Let’s be honest – traffic congestion and the mess that Cedar has become costs me at least 5 minutes more each day each trip to and from work. With the weekends adding a few more delayed minutes let’s round it to an hour of delays each week. An hour a week for nearly every car on the road! All so that the local businesses can have left turn arrows every two blocks? Build some interchanges, and get rid of the pointless stoplights at 142nd, 145th, 155th, and 157th!
November 20th, 2009 at 2:02 pm
Now that I actually read the article about Cedar Avenue after commenting, I realize that the articles are talking about MN-77 and not the County 23 stoplight-infested portion of the road.
Perhaps many of the people like me who complain about Cedar are more annoyed about the part of the road in Apple Valley that is managed by the County and the City – and not about the lack of the third lane on 77. Rebuilding County 23 in the next couple of years as they are proposing for BRT won’t fix any problems long-term.

My take on Kline is mixed. I have a lot of respect for his service, but then, I spent 20 minutes with him in his Washington office when I was visiting a few years back. I wasn’t even living in this district at the time and it’s a random story as to how I got there.
Also, from his perspective, where is the benefit to him? (I know, I know, that doesn’t matter.) But seriously, he’s in a district that elected him with 57% of the vote in a bad year for his party. As long as gerrymandering runs wild, politicians on both sides of the aisle have nothing to benefit from being recorded on stuff like this. Hardly anyone will actually watch it unless he completely screws up and pulls a major gaffe on the air. A lot of politicians’ staff consider it too much of a risk.
From our perspective, it sucks. He represents us and we want to talk to him. But hey, if you can make an annual public forum (which likely happens to be in the middle of your workday), you can meet him face to face. Sounds available to me!
November 20th, 2009 at 4:12 pm
Oh fuck that. If the dude wants me to vote for him he’s going to do what’s best for me and that includes taking softballs from Thisweek. I mean the dude can take a couple minutes out of his day to sit down and chat with Jeff Achen. If not, I’m going to make him the butt of all my jokes.
Does a politician really want to become the punchline for ever Mayor Lizzy or Mayor Mary joke? ;-)
November 20th, 2009 at 4:27 pm
Looking forward to seeing your report on the railcar meeting.
Kline: cynical political gain or no gain isnt a good excuse, basically the guy tends to avoid much exposure back here, unless it is scripted. In that respect he may or may not be unlike others…..gerrymandering of the districts is right, although the redistricting for MN should be interesting and likely Klines district may change a bit… it is possible it gets mixed in with the Paulson seat and the Bachmann district gets changed a little too… whether this is a change for the better or worse remains to be seen.
November 20th, 2009 at 4:30 pm
If I had to choose, I’d rather have Kline’s quiet underexposure than Bachmann’s loud overexposure. But that’s just me.
November 20th, 2009 at 4:33 pm
Bachmann is like Kautz. The media wouldn’t really have much to talk about if that dumbass wasn’t running her mouth :-)
November 20th, 2009 at 5:10 pm
Not out of character for Kline to do that, but declining interviews with local media outlets in his district is fucking stupid and sends the message that he doesn’t give a flying fuck about his constituents.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:38 pm
Sometimes no is just no, with nothing to read into it. Did Kline respond promptly and politely to the interview request? Then there’s zilch to Twitter about.
Do you really expect everyone to say yes to every media invitation?

That Eagan fire was just down the road from me a ways. I was hearing more sirens than I ever had around here for several minutes last night; now I know why.
November 22nd, 2009 at 10:38 pm
Adding the lane on the 77 portion of Cedar will help big time. The County Rd. 23 part is just screwed unless they do some of the stuff ACLR said above.
The area with the shooting in Burnsville is right by where I used to live. I can think of three murders and one case where someone ran over another person and killed them in just the past few years. That area is becoming a shit hole.
November 23rd, 2009 at 2:40 pm
The guy quoted in the article had it right. Traffic during rush on Cedar Ave has been a mess since nearly the day that roadway expansion was done. Adding another lane isn’t going to fix the inherent problems of that roadway, one of which is the drivers that use it.
Minnesota drivers just get worse and worse. Drivers coming out of Apple Valley are almost universally incapable of properly sharing the roadway with others. I have avoided Cedar during rush hours for years, even choosing to sit through the mess that is 35W or use Pilot Knob Road rather than deal with the idiots on Cedar.
If there is some Federal Money to do something, again I have to ask, isn’t there a bridge somewhere that needs to be fixed or replaced?

My 2 cents on John Kline. While pressing the flesh at the Park N Ride maybe 3 or so years ago or whenever he last ran I asked him what they planned to do to handle the Apple Valley Park N Ride situation which at the time was a total distaster, people parking on the streets blocks away due to oveflow. Etc. Etc. His answer: “Well, It’s all very political.” And he had nothing more to add. I know it’s fucking political you idiot, that’s why I asked you fuckhead, you ARE a politician. Dude has no clue, get him out of office, he’s not doing us any favors.
