Bars and Pubs, Burnsville, Restaurants, South Metro
After a month long dialogue with the Minnesota Department of Health, I finally have received most of the data I requested from them in PDF. As promised in my first post which offers up a small subset of restaurant inspection reports from Apple Valley and Farmington, I am moving forward and posting the rest of the next few days. I was planning on posting Burnsville, Eagan, and Lakeville for you as post #2 but due to the length of the lists and the change to a more informative format, I’m going to just do them one at a time beginning with Burnsville below.
I’d like to note a couple of things before I proceed:
1. I had a stop in Chicago’s ORD airport earlier this week and noticed that restaurants in the airport prominently display health inspection information on the walls of all the establishments in clear view. I should have snapped a picture but I was in an unnecessary rush to catch a connection which didn’t come for 4 hours.
2. The City of Boston offers a kick ass system for checking out recent inspections. It’s searchable, it’s informative, and it’s clear on what all the ratings mean. If you want to check it out, click here for the index (under the Neighborhood pulldown there’s a blank section, choose that and click search to see all of the reports). For your viewing pleasure I have listed the restaurants I ate at while I was in Boston below:
3. A few weeks ago I received an e-mail from the supervisor that I have been in contact with at the Minnesota Department of Health and he had this to say:
I read some of your blog. Just a note. “Critical” violations are not all equal. For example: a temperature violation is critical, but having food at 42degF…is not as serious a problem as having it out at 65degF.. both would be critical violations. Inspection staff are highly trained in food safety and the things that can lead to illness outbreaks. They can determine when enforcement needs to be immediate and severe and when time can be allowed for compliance. We do pursue enforcement when the public is clearly at risk from items found during inspection or when food borne outbreaks are evident.
That said here are the Burnsville reports for your viewing pleasure:

Makes it taste like Pepsi, Mrs. M.

“REPAIR GAP UNDER REAR EXIT DOOR TO PREVENT ENTRANCE OF PEST.” Stephano’s – eeewwww! Do you suppose those critters were well fed after seeking shelter from the winter cold????
Lots of pop dispensers not being cleaned – Gross! Makes me want to peek inside the lid of the next one I see, before I buy a fountain pop.

I love the unnecessary use of “quotation” marks in all of these “reports.”

FWIW, has anyone ever been to J’s Restaurant or JR’s Family Reunion (which is an odd name for a restaurant)? I wasn’t able to find much information on them, but they’re close to me.

Tim, I’ve been to J’s based on a recommendation for their pizza and left quite dissapointed.

I’ve been to J’s several times for breakfast. Just a greasy spoon alternative to Denny’s.

I suspect mold might be the secret ingredient in Pepsi products.

the last time i was at stephanos, and i mean the LAST time, i had a nice beverage of an adult nature, while waiting for a shitty pizza to go. had i discovered it before i got home, i’d have taken it back(10 miles ow). at one time i’ve gotten ‘za there that was pretty good. but i guess it’s a sign of the times! regardless of the pepsi or coke!

Is anyone else concerned that the restaurant had to be told this?

Maybe its the toxic spray bottle contents that puts the “rustic” in applewood rustic grill. That’s not a health code violation, its a new menu “feature.”

Can anyone recommend something that pairs well with CLR? I’m thinking Reisling, but then vascillate to Gewurtztraminer.
Aw, screw it. I’ll go with the boxed Chardonnay.

WHEW! You scared me for a second! I was about to dash off a nasty comment asking if you had learned NOTHING during your time here on LL. Luckily you redeemed yourself by going with the boxed Chardonnay. ;)
April 6th, 2009 at 12:04 pm
Not to defend them, but its possible this was just a bottle of 409 or something that someone left on the counter. I think that most of the spray cleaners would be classified as toxic spray bottle.
April 6th, 2009 at 1:25 pm
Well, toxic is toxic and I’d just as soon leave it out of my lunch. ;)
April 6th, 2009 at 2:16 pm
True, although I am 99.9999% sure that Coke is toxic.

What.The.@#$)(&#?!?!?!?!?!?! HOW DARE YOU!!!!!!!!!!
Seriously.
You are SO off my Christmas card list, CHAD!
P.S. I totally say “CHAD” like the guys in the cel phone commercial and laugh at your expense!

(MSPD, I’d go with a Chenin Blanc)

I recognized the names of a couple of restaurants that we have been to. J’s Family Restaurant changed ownership last fall, according to a news story in the local paper. The interior has been refurbished. We decided to go there; it was our first visit. If the place has been refurbished, it must have been a mess before. They are proud of their “home cooking” meals, and entrees for the most part are in the $8-9 range, You get what you pay for: mediocre. We do not plan to return. We also have not returned to Stephano’s. We were there many years ago, and the food was very good. When we went back for a second time, it was no good.
