Kim and I knocked another one off the list with our visit to The Ugly Mug Bar and Grill over in Farmington. I have seen their advertisements in the various coupon books that arrive at the house but never really was in the mood for anything I saw on their menu. Kim was in the mood for a panino but I really wasn’t so we compromised on paninis instead which The Ugly Mug seems to specialize in.
We walked in around 6:00 to a completely empty restaurant. There was a young guy working behind the counter and a young girl working in the back. They are following the annoying trend of sandwich shops and have their menu plastered across a chalk board written with multi-colored chalk. While not crooked like the menu board over at Deluxe Deli in Lakeville, I could tell Kim was annoyed when she reached for the takeout menu on the counter to order from. She later reminded me how much she dislikes menus written on chalk boards.
I looked over the menu and decided on their Corned Beef Ugly Style which is listed as including pepperjack cheese, garlic mayo, cream cheese, and red onions on marble rye for $6.25 (their online and printed menus show different prices than their chalk board, you have been warned) and an order of what are listed as *HOT* wings for $6.25 more. Kim chose their Three Cheese which has tomato and bacon and is served on sourdough. A jalapenjo cheese soft pretzel was also ordered for some unknown amount (their menu says $2.50 but I think they’ve raised those rates too). We also nabbed two soft drinks from their drink coolers which sit adjacent to an impromptu office with piles of shit behind a table stacked with papers and a laptop.
The guy behind the counter let me know that our orders would be up in a few minutes so we took a seat near a window and I got some pictures of the restaurant while three more groups wandered in and out. Two of those that arrived apparently knew the drill and had ordered ahead of time because they were served quickly. Unfortunately for us we weren’t aware of the long delay that lay ahead so we were stuck waiting patiently. While waiting I noticed that the bill was a bit low for what we ordered and I knew right then and there at least one of our items was going to be missing when the food arrived.
Twenty minutes after arriving our paninis and the pretzel arrived sans wings. After I mentioned the missing wings to the guy he apologized profusely and was obviously embarrassed. He asked if we still wanted them and after we said we did, he ran off to put the order in and swipe my card. He returned with the slip for me to sign and again apologized. I really felt for him and appreciated his level of service.
Our sandwiches were really good, especially mine. It has a very interesting mix of items and honestly was something that I would return for soon. Kim’s Three Cheese was good but wasn’t even in the same league as my Corned Beef Ugly Style. I highly recommend my sandwich if you happen to head over to The Ugly Mug. If you do eat it, let me know what you thought, I’m interested in knowing if I was just crazy ;) The pretzel wasn’t what Kim was expecting and instead of having a cheese dipping sauce, it was stuffed with cheese and wasn’t anything all that great. I realize that I eat too much spicy food but this pretzel wasn’t hot at all. In fact it just tasted like it was stuffed with plain old nacho cheese. If you are in the mood for a pretzel, I say skip it here.
After we finished eating we began our long wait for the wings. It took nearly 20 minutes for the wings to come out after we reordered them. While we were sitting there chatting Kim said to me that she hoped that they were good for as long as we had to wait. I was confident they would be but when they arrived I realized that they would be a huge disappointment. The wings weren’t breaded or fried and looked slimy and fatty. They didn’t have much hot sauce on them and I realized right then and there that the *HOT* notice on the chalk board was a bunch of shit. To top it off, even the bleu cheese dressing looked nasty. I have seen better bleu cheese dressing come out of fat free Kraft bottles. After one bite I realized that we should have let fate intervene and I shouldn’t have pushed for these. Kim was shocked that anyone would allow these to remain on the menu. She said that if the owners had ever had wings anywhere else they wouldn’t have decided to leave these on the menu. I had to agree.
Now, even with the sub-par sides, I must emphasize that my sandwich was really really good and Kim’s was decent. I know that they had live music on Fridays and a small selection of bottled beer and wine. I’d love to return some Friday to relax in front of the fireplace, play some of their board games, and have a beer and another panini. If you go remember that the service is *slow* and you’ll be fine.
