Tomorrow will mark my two year anniversary using GMail. While I don’t believe I use it like most people use GMail, I do consider myself a fairly heavy user with my usage stats currently reading765 MB (28%) of 2736 MB.
It’s crazy to think that two years ago this was only a 1 GB service and that after they put an enormous amount of pressure on the other “free” webmail services to bump their storage, they doubled (and still give more by the second) their storage capacity.
I use procmail on my mail server to forward a copy of each e-mail I receive to both my mobile device and GMail. I do most of my mail reading outside of work on the hiptop and most of my e-mail reading at work on the Linux machine via SSH. What the fuck do I use GMail for you ask? Well, permanent storage of just about every piece of e-mail that I have received in two years…
I no longer have to worry about deleting e-mails and wondering what the hell I just deleted. I don’t have 100s of MB of space taken up on my local machine (including backups) of stupid e-mail messages either!
GMail’s text interface works great on my hiptop and I can pull up any e-mail I need quickly and easily.
While I don’t particularly care for their “labels” as I use them just like folders (even though they don’t want you to) it works fine for what I need.
If you haven’t started using GMail, and I know there are people that haven’t, I suggest you do. If you have a problem with the “evil” side of Google, I understand, believe me I do. Carry on — just be aware that nothing “important” makes its way to GMail for me ;)
Kim and I also use Google Calendar. It makes sharing our calendars easy. I just wish that Google would come up with something that would easily sync (two way) with iCal so I could the over-the-air synch it to my hiptop. That would rock!
I use Google Analytics and I’m also a heavy user of their sitemaps program. While this stupid and outdated version of Drupal (fuck you maintainers who haven’t yet fixed the fucking problem with the filter.module) doesn’t support sitemaps integration, I do quite well w/my own homebrew scripts.
What else can they take over for me? Hopefully paying my bills for me now that they have all that money ;)
