As I said before, I have had a few short holiday themed polls over the past week and this one will be no different aside from the fact that it will run for the entire 7 days. This past weekend I asked if you fell asleep after eating Thanksgiving dinner and the majority of you reported that you did not. You did much better than Josh and me. While I purposefully passed out on the floor of his living room, Josh fell asleep in his computer chair and his blissful sleep was rudely interrupted by the full beer bottle that spilled all over his chest after he dozed a bit. If only he had listened to me to put his beer down first ;-)
This week’s poll is also thanks to reader Vickie who wondered when your family sets up the Christmas tree. I changed the name and content a bit knowing that at least one person who reads this site is of the Jewish faith and might want to chime in with his family’s holiday tradition. In addition Vickie wondered if anyone else had any issues with the timing of holiday setups between different sides of the family. Personally, I don’t ever remember a set schedule in my family but I do have timing issues with when it gets taken down — just ask Kim ;-)
So, vote and then comment on about your own holiday traditions as we’d love to hear what you have to say. Happy holidays everyone!

Back in January I made a nerdy New Years Resolution that I would do three things:
1) read a book a week average for the year
2) post an average of 1 post a day for the year
3) have more posts in 2008 than 2006 and 2007 combined
While #3 is a side effect of #2, it was still a goal that kept me moving forward towards my goal. Being the stats nerd that I am, I have been keeping a very close eye on the number of posts and the number that I had left to make the goal. As of this post I have published 353 posts this year which is exactly one more than 2006 and 2007 combined (185 and 167 respectively). While some are questionably lame such as many of those in the “Uncategorized” area, I have done my best to come up with new and interesting content daily.
Just for those of you that might be interested, here are the counts, by month, for 2008. As you can see, especially following the redesign and new direction I took in March, posts have been averaging well over 30 a month:
Year Month Posts
——————————
2008 1 19
2008 2 22
2008 3 25
2008 4 38
2008 5 33
2008 6 37
2008 7 34
2008 8 37
2008 9 32
2008 10 38
2008 11 37
2008 12 1
Now, this is nothing special at all. Plenty of other local bloggers have well over 450 posts a year but it was a milestone and goal for me and one that I plan to keep going through 2009 as best as I can.
I would also like to point out that November also has the claim to fame of being the month with the most comments of all time (286 to October’s 272). I guess November is a month of setting pointless records here :)
Thanks to everyone for reading, commenting, and keeping the site going.

It’s more of when the wife decides they go up, this year it was the week of Thanksgiving (a few days before) and she was motivated to do it. Last year it was after Thanksgiving. Who knows when it will be next year…

I think you should until after Thanksgiving, but I’m okay with people who put them up in November. Before that is just ridiculous though.

Usually I’m a firm up day after thanksgiving, down before New Year’s girl. This year, I’m lazy, and the lack of a Christmas tree will probably ensure that we do zero decorating. Lame for our first year together as wife and husband.
Now I kind of want to go buy a tree.

Dawn, we’re going next weekend (on Saturday) to Revak Nursery per my wife’s request. We haven’t had a live tree even while we were dating and because we aren’t going anywhere this year and the tree is less likely to die, Kim really wants one that’s live.
I just hope she cleans up after it ;-)

I tossed up my lights *on* Thanksgiving, as my family doesn’t stuff ourselves with bird until Sunday. No tree this year, as the house is for sale, but maybe a few non-denomination things like a wreath or something cheery..

Tim – my realtor told me the opposite – told me to do up the house with nice decorations for showing purposes. If that’s the case, we’re going to be sticking with our regular Xmas theme.
I’m a fan of putting decorations up after Thanksgiving and taking them down a few days after New Years. Ours will go up this Saturday or Sunday…or next week, or sometime before our Xmas party. In our neighborhood, decorative lights seem to be up all winter – I’m think that is pretty cool (as well, as long as they are tasteful). With it being so dark, so early in winter, I enjoy the extra glow.

They go up the first warm day following Thanksgiving. If it doesn’t warm up the lights don’t go up. One can be hopeful, right?
And they’re Christmas lights. They’re not fricking holiday lights. Get a spine man. Acknowledging Christmas doesn’t mean you’re dynying any other faith their traditions. I always guessed you were either atheist or agnostic, which means, putting up lights and trees is kind of hypocritical. But I’ve been wrong at least one other time in my life.

bf, actually, being that trees and lights represent nothing more than the celebration of the winter solstice which was probably begun long before the pagans even bothered to add tree worship, I guess I’d be a little less hypocritical than you would believe.

Point taken. Although, you have to admit that it evolved into something recognized, or practiced rather, by primarily Christians up until about the nineties. Everything has become so politically correct. Which incidentally contradicts the way I see our “Me First” society headed.

I won’t disagree there but my opinions as to why that might occur have little to no basis in fact so I’ll leave them out at this time :)

Actually, Chanukah, the festival of lights, started roughly 300 years before the baby Jesus was born in a manger. So really, the Jewish people had them first and perhaps we should call them Chanukah lights.

I like to call them fairy lights.

Bill, I just saw your other comment. We’re not allowed to have live trees in our “crime riddled” apartment complex, so no live tree for us. And since I’m currently without income exceeding 50 bucks a week, no fake tree for us either :)
