From the Star Tribune’s South Metro Police Blotter:
Both places give you three squares but only one makes you serve someone else:
Suspicious person. At 7:38 p.m. police found a man in the garage at the Cinnamon Ridge Apartments. He stated he didn’t know who the garage belonged to. Then he said it belonged to his girl friend, then brother. He was unable to verify if he was there legally so he was transported to Denny’s restaurant in Burnsville.
Now, I realize that these reports are somewhat pieced together and that it blatantly states that they couldn’t “verify if he was there legally,” but I have a real issue with the police moving someone from a private spot to a public one after the story changes several times.
Burnsville Eagan Police Officers please note: when someone tells you at least two different things, they are lying. Do not transport them anywhere except jail. I realize you are understaffed, overworked, and stressed from all those horrendous war protesters and honking horns but please get your collective heads out of your asses, ok?
What do you think about Eagan’s finest unloading some of Burnsville’s worst on Denny’s instead of doing their jobs properly?

Actually that would be Eagan police, Cinnamon Ridge apartments is in Eagan (however it is near the Burnsville border). Also, it really doesn’t make sense that they transported him to Denny’s in Burnsville as it is closed and I believe it’s been that way for a while.

It was more likely the Eagan PD, since Cinnamon Ridge is just across the Eagan side of the line (I used to live there). But it’s still not something they should do, and I can’t imagine Denny’s would be thrilled about it.

I read that, and was waiting for you to post about it!
A fate worse than death?

I am pretty sure Steve is correct. That would be Eagan, and Dennys is closed. Open or closed though, its not normal for our police departments to act as a taxi service is it?
I guess more info is needed. If he was there lawfully, then I guess they should have left him alone. If he was not there lawfully shouldnt they have arrested him or at least held him until the owner could be located to see if anything was missing or damaged?
And I would think transporting an unknown person, who may or may not be in a mentally altered state to a local business seems dangerous at the very least.

You’re missing the point. The purpose of the criminal justice system is to deter crimes. A couple trips to Denny’s and I’d walk the straight and narrow in no damn time. Prison, with it’s good food, warm cells and happy inmates teaching me how to be a better criminal next time.. or a grand slam with high density pancake mix, pork-like products that can’t legally be called sausage, or pork and a couple fried egzz that came from Dow Chemical and have had nothing to do with a chicken???? Really? The customers and inmates look about the same to me.
Funny- I’ve been to Denney’s exactly once in 20 years. Right when the new Apple Valley one opened. Went in and I swear to G-d I was in a David Lynch directed version of Fast Food Nation. The place was packed with enormous people, (bigger than me for example) eating mountains of shitty food. AND the cherry, I saw no less than TWO PEOPLE INJECT THEMSELVES WITH INSULIN while I was sitting there. Creepy.
Bottom line for teh Attention Disabled Community- Denny’s sucks. Jail would be better. Except for the part about getting sold for a pack of cigs.. but still.

What a great tactic to lower crime statistics! Instead of the bothersome process of driving all the way to jail, doing all of that paperwork and dealing with ne’er-do-wells, you just drive 100 yards into the next town and quietly dump ‘em in a vacant lot!
I can see the Eagan Chamber of Commerce press release now: “In the first half of 2009, we had zero arrests for burglaries vs. 678 arrests in neighboring Burnsville.”
Brilliant!

I thought it was in Eagan but I figured I was just remembering my boundaries incorrectly. I also knew that Denny’s was closed but I couldn’t remember when it happened.
I have made some changes to the original post above to reflect the corrections stated by others.

Ha! That is pretty funny.
I don’t think it’s a crime for someone to lie to the police. I don’t think it’s even a crime to hang out in someone else’s unlocked garage. Obviously, this guy seems pretty shady and may even have been under the influence of something. My guess is the police might have patted him down, ran a search for warrants, and concluded they had no grounds to arrest him.
As for the ride to Denny’s — maybe that is just short hand for the intersection of 13 and Cliff, where there is an MVTA bus stop. Or maybe his car was parked there. Who knows.
July 15th, 2009 at 2:22 pm
the dennys at 13 and cliff closed i believe the end of may. why didn’t eagans finest pass him on to burnsvilles finest and figure out what his story actually was?
i think brandon’s correct, we don’t have the full story.

I’m actually a little bit disappointed that Denny’s closed. I barely ever went there (it’s Denny’s, after all), but, being a bit of a night owl when left to my own devices, it was nice to have a place relatively nearby to grab a bite to eat that was open 24/7.
July 15th, 2009 at 9:35 pm
I dunno. Sounds like some further explanation from the police is in order. They may have gotten a hint that the guy was from that area so they just wanted to move him along.

That Denny’s was a shit hole even by Denny’s standards. I agree with with Tim though that I will miss it a little. I lived in the townhouses right down the street and it was a walkable place to get some crappy breakfast and coffee once in a while. Always an interesting crowd too. There used to be a Wendy’s right behind it too, but that’s been gone for a while now. Luckily there are 4,356,232 other crappy locations of both resturants for those times that I want to punish my digestive system.

Isn’t J’s Cafe just up the hill on Cliff a better place for crappy breakfast and coffee anyway? Granted, not open 24 hours….
July 16th, 2009 at 10:32 am
Could very well be; I’ve never been there. But yeah, it’s the 24 hour aspect that gave Denny’s its (only) value. I’ve never been to a Denny’s while the sun was out.
I wish there was more for late-night dining down here besides the Denny’s/Perkins/IHOP trio and the odd fast food place, but I do not know if there would be enough of a market for it.
July 16th, 2009 at 4:20 pm
I never went to J’s Cafe either. That would have required a walk up a hill, so gravity sort of led me toward the Denny’s. ;)

Posting on cell phone and my other comment got lost.
Female jogger attacked tonight at knifepoint, dragged into woods and attacker tried to tie/tape her up. Wood Park in Burnsville. Attacker is white 6 foot plus.
Police found evidence (tape/rope) in woods. Perimeter up but helicopter has left scene.
Jogger was able to fight off attacker and run.
You heard it on Bill’s site first
July 16th, 2009 at 11:21 pm
holy crap. Our kid plays lacrosse at that park, and practiced there earlier tonight. Thanks for the heads up MSPD.
July 16th, 2009 at 11:55 pm
What time MSPD?
July 17th, 2009 at 12:49 am
MSPD, thanks for the breaking news. We need to demand that the Burnsville City Council conduct a worksession focused on crime in the city. As I have pointed out on several occasions rape is doule the YTD – April counts. The city council needs to stop spending money on orchestra shells, AV exuipment, and marketing of the PAC and spend this money on maintaining our police and fire staffing (do not forget we have had some very high profile fires / arsons in the last 12 months). Yeah madam mayor, Burnsville has crime like every other city, but what are you doing about keeping us safe in these times of increased serious crimes, which should be the primary fucntion of city government, to Protect and Serve! Madam Mayor, there are dozens of other parks in the city besides Nicollet Commons Park, do your job and stop the spending on the PAC/HOC/NCP and spend it on protecting the citizens!! Oh yeah, you do not think we have an issue with crime or an increase in crime, so forgive me for expecting you to do anything about it in a proactive manner. What is it going to take for you to act? We can not just continue to pretend that all is well in Burnsville and the south metro. Lets see some plans to address crime and implement them quickly.
July 17th, 2009 at 1:04 am
Jeff, Derrick, Jessica, John, anyone, anyone?? I beleive Jeff commented last week that the rape numbers were shocking as being double YTD-April in Burnsville. I am requesting that all of you dive into the Burnsville and Dakota County crime reports and counts (May numbers still not released yet, is the city amending them or manipualting them similar to the VenuWorks reports?) and compare Burnsville crime numbers to those of other cities in Dakota County YTD and in 2008, 2007 and get to the bottom of why Burnsville is the leader in crime year over year. Jeff, as I have proposed in previous posts, an interview with the Burnsville Chief of Police Hawkins asking the hard questions should be at the top of your list for people to interview. If you would like assistance with a dozen tough questions to ask in an interview, I would be happy to provide you with my list to review.

Do not forget earlier this week a Burnsville man was arrested and charged with repeatedly having sexual intercourse with his girl friend’s 14 year old daughter in a Burnsville Hotel on several occasions. What more needs to happen? I continue to see stories such as this but they are all treated as individual incidents and reported as such. I beleive we have a much bigger issue when you take a step back and look at crime and rapes in Burnsville and this needs to be reported on and ideally recognized and addressed by the Burnsville City Council and Burnsville Police Department.
The problem with the reporting of the crimes in the south metro is the reporting is only focused on specific incidents and crimes. No one is keeping “score” of the crimes, the type of crimes, and drawing any conclusions from this analysis and comparing these counts to other surrounding south metro cities.

Unless Jeff and Derrick are reading from thir homes (I know Derrick does) they won’t be posting here as I have more or less banned Thisweek’s IP range from directly accessing the site until they pay me what I am due for the theft and publishing of my photo without my permission.
