The other day I was at Cub getting lord only knows what and happened to catch a glimpse of “Buffalo Wing” out of the corner of my eye. As you know anything that even passively mentions wings will catch my full attention and this was no exception.
I wandered over closer and noticed that Cub had a bunch of wedges of flavored cheese all priced at $6.99. While they didn’t carry Yancey’s entire lineup, in addition to the buffalo wing they also had jalapeno peppadew and champagne at the very least. I was searching for an even spicier version, such as the jalapeno habanero displayed on Yancey’s website but came up short. The Buffalo Wing would have to do and thankfully it included both jalapenos and habaneros!
So I bought the wedge and brought it home and let it sit in the fridge for a few days before I took a closer look and taste. The cheese has the typical heavy red wax rind and was clearly full of peppers. Cutting the cheese (heh) was really easy as it was quite soft and had the texture of something slightly more dense than cold cream cheese. I took a small sliver and let it melt on my tongue. The taste was something I knew was familiar but I couldn’t quite place it at first. Eventually, after three or four more pieces I was finally able to discern what it was that I was tasting…Yancey’s Fancy Buffalo Wing Cheese reminded me of Velveeta in both consistency and cheese taste. Not very fancy there eh Yancey?
But while I thought the cheese itself was pretty basic, coupled with the strong and distinct pepper flavors this was a big win for me. I have eaten probably 1/4 of the wedge already without anything to accompany it and while I’m having a real hard time deciding what this cheese would pair well with, I am quite happy eating it all by itself. Unfortunately, following my discovery that this is little more than Velveeta with peppers and Frank’s Red Hot, I’m guessing this will be my last purchase of Yancey’s Fancy Buffalo Wing Cheese and I will soon replace it with some other cheese base and just add my own peppers and hot sauce. I’m quite positive I could make the entire thing for less than they charge for a single wedge–and mine would actually be fancy.
Overall I loved the cheese but it had less to do with the cheese part itself and more with the excellent pepper flavors. While I haven’t tried and of Yancey’s other cheese products, I am hesitant to do so with the fear that they will just remind me of some other cheap and processed cheese product being passed off as something worthy of their $7 price tags.
Have you ever had Yancey’s Fancy cheeses? If so what did you think? Have you had the Buffalo Wing variety specifically? Do you agree it tastes like Velveeta with peppers and hot sauce? Do you know of any other cheese products which offer hot peppers inside that are worth a look (I have had one from Northfield’s co-op which is filled with habaneros and is pretty awesome)? Whatever you have to say about Yancey’s Fancy Buffalo Wing Cheese go ahead and comment on as I’d love to hear your thoughts.

I like cheese. I once bought one of Yancey’s cheeses that was a champagne cheddar or something. It tasted like the “cheese” you get in a Hickory Farms sausage basket. Like velveeta it is a cheese product, not a cheese. If you go to their website you will see they show flavored cheeses and natural cheeses.
I do recommend the cheeses of Carr Valley from Wisconsin. They make some flavored cheeses with peppers and should be better. I have never tried them and they may also be a cheese product. But the quality of Carr Valleys natural cheeses is excellent and have won numerous national and intl awards.
we travel to Chicago and Madison alot on I94 and a stop at their cheese store at the Mauston WI exit is always in the plans. You should be able to find their cheddars in many supermarkets here, but their really good stuff is the specialty cheeses.

Ah, but the Mauston Exit isn’t the right on to stop at. You need to stop at the Chippewa Falls exit, where they have cheese, fireworks, guns, and a strip club/adult book store, all in one nice convenient location!

cheese , fireworks, guns and a strip club and adult book store,
i am trying to figure out how the cheese fits into that line up.
How far is the Leinie brewery from there.

Cheese because it’s in Wisconsin!
The brewery is only 4 or 5 miles from I-94.

If it has the texture of Velveeta it might make a nice macaroni and cheese?
I’m pretty sure you can buy cheese in any retail outlet in the state of Wisconsin.

I picked up Carr Valley cranberry and chipotle cheese at Cub Apple Valley today. It is pricey at about $8-$9 per wedge. It really has the kick of the chipotle peppers with a slight sweetness from the cranberries in a creamy cheddar cheese base. I really like it! I saw Bill’s Yancey’s cheese in pretty close range. I can understand why it tastes like Velveeta since it is a pasteurized process cheese.

Go out and see if you can find Yancey’s Fancy Buffalo Wing Cheddar Cheese Curds. I guarantee you will not be disappointed! They are real cheese (i.e. no pasteurized process crap) and they are absolutely delicious with a really nice “kick” to them. This quality product will make up for the mediocre experience you had with their other cheeses.

Yes, it most definitely tastes like Velveeta… The only way to eat it, and make it worthwhile, is to put it in one of the small crockpots, let it melt and then dip veggies, chicken wings and/or bread in it. Then it’s a gourmet-ish dip!
